Study finds increase in Icelandic Atheism and Paganism

Cyber Atheists engaged in a massive form of group-think last week as they celebrated the results of a study that, likely, none of them read.

The study finds that “Less than half of Icelanders claim they are religious and more than 40% of young Icelanders identify as atheist…93.9% of Icelanders younger than 25 believed the world was created in the big bang, 6.1% either had no opinion or thought it had come into existence through some other means and 0.0% believed it had been created by God.”

Firstly, on the surface it is a false dichotomy to separate “the big bang” from “created by God” as the big bang can refer to God’s creative act. However, they are obviously asserting a big bang whereby no one caused nothing to explode for no reason.

Now, “The poll, which was conducted by the polling firm Maskína on behalf of Siðmennt, The Icelandic Ethical Humanist Association, an association of Icelandic atheists.

It is interesting that Atheists do not seem to even consider it the least bit suspect and are otherwise not skeptical about the fact that the study was conducted “on behalf of” Humanist and Atheist organizations.

I referred to “a study that, likely, none of them read” and include myself therein as the study, found here, has not, as far as I know, not been translated into English.

When people stop believing in God, they don’t believe in nothing – they believe in anything—GK Chesterton

Now, fascinatingly, the very same article to which Atheists are referring also notes, “the ancient Sumerian religion Zuism become the fastest growing religion in Iceland.”

I have noted for some time now that Atheism is neo-Pagan, see here.

Zuism is being popularized, in part, due to local Icelandic political and economic issues and it is, in fact, a neo-Pagan religion that worships Sumerian deities such as Anu, Enlil, Enki, Ninhursag, Nanna, Utu, and Inanna.

Activist Atheists in general have become caricatures of themselves as, in this case, they celebrate the supposed rise in Atheism in Iceland even whilst Atheists are officially, for one or another reason, becoming neo-Pagan (and were actually neo-Pagan before the popularizing of Zuism.

Idolatry, fallen Angles, Nephilim and giants

We continued, from part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, considering the issue of the Nephilim via the 1879 AD book The Fallen Angels and the Heroes of Mythology, the Same with “The Sons Of God” And “The Mighty Men” of the Sixth Chapter of the First Book Of Moses (Dublin: Hodges, Foster, And Figgis, Publishers To The University, 1879 AD) by Rev. John Fleming, A.B. Incumbent of Ventry And Kildrum, Diocese of Ardfert; Rural Dean; and Irish Society’s Missionary.

Genesis 4:26b reads as follows:

KJV …then began men to call upon the name of the LORD. NKJV …Then men began to call on the name of the LORD. NLT …At that time people first began to worship the LORD by name. NIV …At that time people began to call on [or, to proclaim] the name of the LORD. ESV …At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD. HCSB …At that time people began to call on the name of Yahweh. NASB …Then men began to call [or, by] upon the name of the LORD. NET …At that time people began to worship the LORD. RSV …At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD. ASV …Then began men to call upon the name of Jehovah. YLT …then a beginning was made of preaching in the name of Jehovah. DBY …Then people began to call on the name of Jehovah. WEB …then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

HNV …Then men began to call on the LORD’s name.

Well, there is certainly much agreement with the more modern versions. However, Rabbi Shlomo ben Itzaki aka Solomon son of Isaac aka Rashi (1040-1105) is quoted as paraphrasing thusly, “Then was it begun to call the names of men and the names of images after that of the Holy and Blessed One—to make idols, and to call them gods” (Pent. With Raschi’s Comm. Amsterd., published 1721 AD).
Also the 1590 AD Latin Bible published by Immanuel Tremellius and François du Jon aka Franciscus Junius reads, “Tunc coeptum est profanari in invocando nomine Jehovae” which mirrors Henry Ainsworth (1571-1622 AD) who translated the verse as “Then began men profanely to call on the name of the Lord.”

Dr. Maitland connects the whole of the heathen belief with the events of which our passage contains the record. He believes that the first false worship was introduced by the sinning angels, and that they were themselves the first objects of it (p. 20). It should, however, be observed that if, as tradition relates, and as is not improbable, the fallen angels appeared in the world some hundreds of years before the Deluge (see§ 17), false worship; admitting it to have been first introduced by them, might have been widely prevalent long before that event. [P. 60]

If Genesis 4 does tell us of the beginnings of idolatry, we can see why by the Genesis 6 affair humans were primed to interact in such a way with fallen Angels.

One of the most difficult, as it is one of the most important, questions to be answered by the interpreter of this portion of Scripture is, Are the giants (Nephilim), the Sons of God (Bne-Elohim), and the mighty men (Gibborim), three distinct classes? or, can the first-mentioned be shewn to be identical with either of the others?…

The etymology of the word, [lexicographer Wilhelm] Gesenius says, is uncertain. Some derive it from…to separate or distinguish, taking it to denote those who were in some way distinguished above other men : but, by the greater number…is regarded as the root, different significations, however, being affixed to the term Nephilim, according to the various senses in which that verb may be taken….

Dr. Delitzsch, who believes that the beings called Nephilim and Gibborim were, all, the sons of the Bne-Elohim [so the sons of the sons of God], although brought into existence at different periods, and who takes the Hebrew expression, or combination of particles above referred to, in the signification of postea, quum =afterwards, when, not postquam =after that, gives the following as his translation of the verse—a translation, it may be observed, which agrees with that of the Authorized Version—
“The giants were (i.e., were living, were present) on the earth in those days (i.e., at the time when God appointed the respite of 120 years): and also, after that (i.e., after sentence of condemnation had been pronounced, and during the progress of those years), when the Sons of God joined themselves to the daughters of men, and they bare children to them (giants arose likewise): and these (i.e., the later-born) are the heroes, who from old time have been men of name.” [PP. 96-97, 105]

Fleming is of the opinion that “we will be of opinion, that these beings must have been in the world for a considerable time before the commencement of the 120 years” (P. 124).

Interestingly, John Fleming references, “the testimony of ancient writers, and partly on the discovery of colossal bones, supposed to be human, but which in reality were those of elephants or other animals of large size” (P. 110) which is something about which I wrote in Adrienne Mayor “The First Fossil Hunters”.

Did Jesus exist? Jesus and Pagan myths

We continue, from part 1, part 2, part 3, considering pop-research on the issue of the historical Jesus and Jesus mythicism with regards to some Atheists who have taken to the utterly radical view that Jesus never even existed. I have been considering Michael Paulkovich and Raphael Lataster and, in this case, I got into a comment section discussion within an article written by YouTube celebrity Atheist AaronRa that was simply titled “Jesus never existed” November 3, 2015 AD.

See my article Historical Jesus – two centuries worth of citations wherein I chronicled 205 texts that reference Jesus dating from pre 70 AD to 200-250 AD

The Jewish person lorasinger makes a comeback to the historical Jesus issue by referring to the supposed likeness between Jesus and mythical figures:

Re: If you really believe that there are dozens of stories from the pagan world of a god and mortal woman producing a sacrificial man, etc. please provide citations.

Read: Paganism in Christianity (A. Weigall) The Pagan Christ (T. Harpur).

Horus (Egypt – 3000 BC): Born on Dec. 25th, born of a virgin, star in the east, adorned by 3 kings, teacher at 12, baptized/ministry at age 30, 12 disciples

Attis (Greece – 1200 BC): Born of a virgin, born on Dec 25th, crucified, dead for 3 days, resurrected

Mithra (Persia – 1200 BC): Born of a virgin, born on Dec 25th, 12 disciples, performed miracles, dead for 3 days, resurrected

Krishna (India – 900 BC): Born of a virgin, star in the east, performed miracles, resurrected

Dionysus (Greece – 500 BC): Born of a virgin, born on Dec 25th, performed miracles, “king of kings”, “alpha and omega”, resurrected

There are no man gods in Judaism.

A commentator who goes by the pseudonym rabbit chimes in at this point such a one word comment to lorasinger, “Applause” which means that rabbit was very pleased with lorasinger’s reply. This actually denotes just how pleased some people are with elephant hurling: making impressive sounding statement that have an air of authority about them. Well, I have been through this many times and so made a point and asked a key question:

Sorry friend, but I am afraid that you either misunderstood or fell for typical pop-talking points. You stated, “Re: If you really believe that there are dozens of stories from the pagan world of a god and mortal woman producing a sacrificial man, etc. please provide citations.”

But this is not what I requested as I know very well that people generically claim all sorts of things. What I requested was that you “provide citations to primary source material ONLY as such claims proposed by very, very recent pop-“researchers” fall short.”

Just listing generic claims is not providing citations and especially is not providing citations to primary source material ONLY.

Again, I have been through this many times and so I knew that no such citations were forthcoming and indeed, here is lorasinger’s reply:

Any book of myths contains such stories and I guess you missed two books which are written about it too, neither of whom are “pop researchers”.
There are no men gods in Judaism and that leaves only the pagans, Ken.

It was noticed even by the end of the first century/beginning of the second. Even Justin Martyr recognized the analogies between Christianity and Paganism. To the Pagans, he wrote: “When we say that the Word, who is first born of God, was produced without sexual union, and that he, Jesus Christ, our teacher, was crucified and died, and rose again, and ascended into heaven; we propound nothing different from what you believe regarding those whom you esteem sons of Jupiter (Zeus).” [First Apology, ch. xxi]

What could I do but push forwards with the following:

Friend, you are not conversant with these issues and I am empathetic thus, I am not making fun but encourage you to look into these things beyond the level of repeating talking points and cutting and pasting whatever comes up when you search only for that information which already agrees with what you want to believe.

You made a specific claim and I asked for citations but you have none. I do not ask because I lack the info but ask because I know the info and you will find no such into in books of myths. What you will find is, for example, a very, very late dated story about the Buddha’s (if any such person ever existed) mother having a dream that a white elephant entered her side.

Then, you are told that the Buddha was born of a virgin. This is the disconnect between the primary source materials and how they are reported by the pop researchers whom you believe without, apparently, checking up on their claims. Also, I have no problem noticing likenesses between all sorts of things like the Genesis 6 story ultimately turning into Greek tales about Titans, etc.

Now, I am unsure as to how you can authoritatively assert what there is and is not in (all of) Judaism. For example, there is no transmigration of the soul reincarnation in biblical Judaism but there is in Rabbinic Judaism. If you want to see a literal God man just read Genesis 18 where the one true living God manifests as a man who eats with, walks with and talks with Abraham.

So now, I requested specific citations yet again and directed lorasinger to Genesis 18. In the next segment, we will see what they have to say about the text within the Jewish scriptures.
