Book of Enoch in the early church, 1

Within this series, you will find info from The Gospel of Peter, The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, The Epistle of Barnabas aka Pseudo-Barnabas, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Anatolius of Alexandria, Jerome plus Alfred Loisy. See my previous articles Did the prophet Enoch write the Book of Enoch? and 1, 2, 3 Books of Enoch and Methuselah

May generic statements can be found online, may repeated again and again, which reference certain early church leaders with regards to the Book of Enoch. However, most do not provide quotations or citations and until such a time as I can track more references down these will make due.

In this segment we will consider The Gospel of Peter, The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs.

GOSPEL OF PETER (70-160 AD):

M.R. James, trans., The Apocryphal New Testament on the Gospel of Peter:

The early testimonies about this book have been set forth already. The present fragment was discovered in 1884 in a tomb at Akhmimin Egypt. The manuscript in which it is a little book containing a portion of the Book of Enoch in Greek, this fragment on the Passion and another, a description of Heaven and Hell, which is either (as I now think) a second fragment of the Gospel, or a piece of the Apocalypse of Peter. It will be given later under that head.

THE TESTAMENTS OF THE TWELVE PATRIARCHS (70-200 AD):

The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs’ Testament of Simeon Concerning Envy:

For I have seen it inscribed in the writing of Enoch that your sons shall be corrupted in fornication…the book of Enoch the righteous.

The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs’ Testament of Dan Concerning Anger and Lying:

[For I have read in the book of Enoch, the righteous, that your prince is Satan, and that all the spirits of wickedness and pride will conspire to attend constantly on the sons of Levi, to cause them to sin before the Lord. And my sons will draw near to Levi. And sin with them in all things; And the sons of Judah will be covetous, Plundering other men’s goods like lions.] (brackets in R. H. Charles’s The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament, Vol II)

Clergy for Choice’s Planned Parenthood 40 days of prayer

“abortion is a blessing”
—Atheist activist Dan Barker

“I don’t want them punished with a baby”
“Thank you, Planned Parenthood. God bless you.”

—Barack Obama

“all who hate me love death”
—Proverbs 8:36

Humboldt County Clergy for Choice, which is an official committee of Six Rivers Planned Parenthood, has published “A message of support from” in the form of an invitation:
…to set aside time with your family & community for 40 Days of Prayer Supporting Women Everywhere.

I should be upfront and admit to being pro-choice as I believe that every woman everywhere has to right to choose whether or not to get pregnant. However, once she is pregnant it is a different issue altogether. Also, I support planned parenthood. No, not the abortuary Planned Parenthood but I support planning, ahead of time (before getting pregnant) whether or not one wants to become a parent.

The pamphlet from which we will be quoting was written by “Faith Aloud” which clearly means that this person(s) is so ashamed of themselves that they use a pseudonym. And, by the way, if you think that they hide their identify to protect them from those dangerous pro-lifers note these stats (drawing from the slightly outdated (meaning you must add a few million more abortions) article found here:
In thirty years (1973-2002) over 42,000,000 (legal) abortions have taken place worldwide.
In thirty years eight abortionist “doctors” have been murdered in separate incidents in both the USA and Canada combined.

Thus, pro-choice / pro-abortion proponents have nothing to fear—but beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies do.

One prayer is as follows:
Day 22: Today we pray for an end to all violence against abortion providers.
Day 33: Today we offer a prayer of remembrance for abortion providers who lost their lives because of their commitment to women.

But there are no prayers in the 40 days for an end to all violence against beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies. They cannot pray that as there are in favor of abortion and abortion’s one and only purpose is to do violence against beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies.

In Ezekiel chapter eight we find that satanists (by any other name) were secretly performing satanic rituals. Today, with groups such as Clergy for Choice the satanists do not even bother hiding anymore. They are not praying prayers to satan for the blessing of child sacrificers but are publishing their intents on the worldwide web.

Now, of course, when terms such as “Supporting Women Everywhere,” “Women’s rights,” “Women’s health,” etc. are employed with regards to Planned Parenthood or other abortuaries you know that they are playing word games in order to play games with your emotions and social justify sentiments. What those terms are used to hide is: baby murder / child sacrifice.

Let us begin with this one:
Day 18: Today we pray for all the staff at abortion clinics around the nation. May they be daily confirmed in the sacred care that they offer women.
This is whey Humboldt County Clergy for Choice were referred to as satanists and referred to abortion as child sacrifice: they refer to the brutal dismembering murder of beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies as being a sacred act. For more on this satanic doctrine see Sacred Abortion.

Here is another likewise one:
Day 28: Today we pray for the women who travel hundreds of miles to get an abortion. May their determination be rewarded with spiritual strength.
Note that it is being stated that it is a reward to have enough spiritual strength to actually be traveling a long distance, during which time someone’s consciousness can be bothersome. It requires satanic spiritual strength to push through and spend a lot of time and money to commit safe murder.

And another one, this time quite enigmatic:
Day 36: Today we pray for the families we’ve chosen. May they know the blessing of choice.
They have—“we’ve”—chosen for what, prayer? They do not say but they do affirm that choice, which to them means the choice for abortion, is a blessing.

Some of the other prayers scheduled for each of the 40 days are:
Day 1: Today we pray for women for whom pregnancy is not good news, that they know they have choices.
The overwhelmingly vast majority of abortions are birth control abortions and have nothing at all to do with rape, incest or anything of the sort. Thus, women most certainly do have choices; one of which is to not have sex if they do not want to get pregnant as that is the one and only 100% manner whereby for a woman who does not want to be pregnant to not get pregnant. This is, of course, utterly unthinkable in today’s world which is why women have sex—the act which produces pregnancy—are shocked when they find themselves pregnant and then force their very own beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human baby pay the ultimate price.

Day 2: Today we pray for compassionate religious voices to speak out for the dignity and autonomy of women.
Day 29: Today we pray that all women will know that they are created in the image of God, good and holy, moral and wise.

I do not know about generic “religious voices” but those who follow the Bible can simply quote the Bible with regards to the dignity of women—see Find it Fast – Fast Facts: is the Bible misogynistic? Autonomy may be another issue as the term is not defined within the pamphlet and could thus mean something to the likes of hearing women roar. Note, there are not prayers in the 40 days that ask for compassionate religious voices to speak out for the dignity (and autonomy?) of beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies.

Thus, indeed, women are created in the image of God (as the Bible states), yet only YHVH is good (Mark 10:18) but women can be holy, moral and wise.

Day 30: Today we pray for women to throw away their secrets and claim their histories with power and truth.
Now this is a good one—yet, not in the way they meant it. This should mean that the prayer is for women to throw away their secrets and repent.

Day 3: Today we pray for our daughters and granddaughters, that they will always know the power of making their own good decisions.
Day 15: Today we pray for parents whose teen daughters are pregnant. May they help their daughters through this difficult time with kindness and openness.
This is one of the biggest deception of modern times when it comes to such issues.

Daughters and granddaughters (and grown women) are being talked into believing that the power of making their own good decisions only begins once they, somehow, find themselves pregnant when they did not want to be pregnant. They are not encouraged to live ethical, sexually responsible lives since that particular choice would interfere with the culture de jour which preaches doing what we want, when we want it, as much as we want, anytime, anywhere, anyhow.

Day 23: Today we give thanks for the strong women in our lives who have given us examples of good decision-making.
But to just what good decisions are they referring?

Day 4: Today we give thanks for the doctors who provide quality abortion care, and pray that they may be kept safe. There is no such thing as “quality abortion care” as the one and only purpose of an abortion proceeding is a brutal, dismembering, painful, inhuman, inhumane and subhuman murder: the point is to bring about the death of beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies. So called “doctors” (so called because the very concept of an abortion “doctor” is someone who’s very practice is based upon breaking the Hippocratic Oath) do not need to worry about being safe for the reasons detailed above.

Note, within the 40 days there is not one single prayer for that the beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies be kept safe.

Day 6: Today we ask for blessings upon the women who pass through hostile protesters on their way into an abortion clinic. May they be shielded from physical and emotional harm from those who do not know them.
Day 34: Today we give thanks for abortion escorts who guide women safely through the hostile gauntlets of protesters.

Again, no regard whatsoever for the more vulnerable amongst us: beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies. No prayers for babies who are brought in, by their very own mothers, into abortuaries that are hostile and from which they are not shielded from physical and emotional harm as the very point of an abortuary is to cause physical and emotional harm.

Day 7: Today we pray for the 45 million American women who have had safe, legal abortions. May they stand tall and refuse shame.
Day 12: Today we pray that women know the power of their own stories. May they find their voices and tell their truths.

These are prayers that women who have murdered their very own beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies will not repent and thus, be forgiven. Also, there is no such thing as a safe abortion as the point of an abortion is to cause death.

Day 25: Today we pray for women who have been made afraid of their own power by their religion. May they learn to reject fear and live bravely.
In keeping with the above, this one is condemnatory of religions who dare to refer to murder as murder.

Day 8: Today we pray for elected officials, that they may always support a woman’s right to make her own medical decisions.
Note that there are no prayers that elected officials would always support beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies’ right to make her own medical decisions. Perhaps babies should be allowed to live long enough to be able to answer whether or not they want to be brutally dismembered.

Day 10: Today we pray for women who were joyfully expecting a child, but have learned that the pregnancy is not sustainable.
Finally, a moment of clarity from these satanists. Of course, what is sustainable? The only ethical reason for abortion; if the woman’s life is in jeopardy or the baby dies in the womb (in which case it is not abortion since the baby is no murdered).

Day 11: Today we pray for better access to all forms of birth control.
Day 17: Today we pray for increased financial support for low income women to access contraception, abortion, and childcare.

And the very best, 100% reliable, form of birth control is not only available to all women everywhere but is free—abstinence.

Day 13: Today we pray for the men in our lives, that they may offer their loving kindness and support for women’s difficult decisions.
No real man would sit idly by and allow their beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies to be brutally murdered.

Day 14: Today we pray for Christians everywhere to embrace the loving model of Jesus in the way he refused to shame women.
Jesus did not shame women but this has nothing to do with the fact that there are literally millions upon millions of women who have murdered their very own beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies. Yes, they too need love and true prayer to the true God YHVH.

Day 19: Today we pray for all pregnant women. May they be surrounded by loving voices.
No prayer for all beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies that they be surrounded by loving voices.

Day 20: Today we pray for the families of yesteryear who still mourn the loss of their mothers, sisters, and aunts due to illegal abortion.
No prayer for the families of yesteryear who still mourn the loss of their potential mothers, sisters, and aunts due to legal abortions—all 42,000,000 of them. What they mourn is that women died in the act of committing murder. Why did no one try to get them to understand that children as a heritage from the LORD and not an inconvenience?

Day 24: Today we pray for an end to hateful language that diminishes the dignity of women.
Day 32: Today we pray for an end to the stigma perpetrated against women who have abortions.

It actually is important to uphold a certain level of discourse. However, murders have no dignity as they have done away with it. They offer no reason whatsoever for demanding, via a prayer no less, that there be no stigma against women who have abortions. Of course, they have stigmatized themselves by perpetrating such a crime against humanity.

Day 27: Today we give thanks for abortion providers around the nation whose concern for women is the driving force in their lives.
No prayer for true healthcare providers around the nation whose concern for beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies is the driving force in their lives.

Day 31: Today we pray for all discrimination against women to cease.
They do not specify what they mean but contextually it appears that condemning the brutal, dismemberment of beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies is discriminatory. Well, so be it.

Day 37: Today we pray for women to claim their equality and demand their rights as citizens.
No prayer for beautiful, healthy, innocent and defenseless human babies to claim their equality and demand their rights as citizens.

Day 38: Today we pray for a cloud of gentleness to surround every abortion facility. May everyone feel calm and loving.
They have to pray for this because a facility that specifically functions to shed innocent blood cannot be a gentle, calm and loving place. They want this so as to mask the house of horrors hidden behind the doors.

Day 39: Today we pray for a contagious love to overflow from our spirits.
Well, “God is love” (1 John 4:8) and abortion is not of God. Well, it is not of the one true living God YHVH but it is from “god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4) which is satan. Thus, the only manner whereby their spirits can act as a contagion is via the cursedness of their “prayers.”

Book of Enoch in the early church, 3

Within this series, beginning with part 1, part 2, you will find info from The Gospel of Peter, The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, The Epistle of Barnabas aka Pseudo-Barnabas, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Anatolius of Alexandria, Jerome plus Alfred Loisy. See my previous articles Did the prophet Enoch write the Book of Enoch? and 1, 2, 3 Books of Enoch and Methuselah.

May generic statements can be found online, may repeated again and again, which reference certain early church leaders with regards to the Book of Enoch. However, most do not provide quotations or citations and until such a time as I can track more references down these will make due.

In this segment we will consider Tertullian and Origen.

TERTULLIAN (160-225 AD):

On the Apparel of Women, Book I, Chapter III:

I am aware that the Scripture of Enoch, which has assigned this order (of action) to angels, is not received by some, because it is not admitted into the Jewish canon either. I suppose they did not think that, having been published before the deluge, it could have safely survived that world-wide calamity, the abolisher of all things.

If that is the reason (for rejecting it), let them recall to their memory that Noah, the survivor of the deluge, was the great-grandson of Enoch himself; and he, of course, had heard and remembered, from domestic renown and hereditary tradition, concerning his own great-grandfather’s “grace in the sight of God,” and concerning all his preachings; since Enoch had given no other charge to Methuselah than that he should hand on the knowledge of them to his posterity. Noah therefore, no doubt, might have succeeded in the trusteeship of (his) preaching; or, had the case been otherwise, he would not have been silent alike concerning the disposition (of things) made by God, his Preserver, and concerning the particular glory of his own house.

book20of20enoch-9251712
Dead Sea Scroll 1 Book of Enoch fragment

If (Noah) had not had this (conservative power) by so short a route, there would (still) be this (consideration) to warrant our assertion of (the genuineness of) this Scripture: he could equally have renewed it, under the Spirit’s inspiration, after it had been destroyed by the violence of the deluge, as, after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonian storming of it, every document of the Jewish literature is generally agreed to have been restored through Ezra.

But since Enoch in the same Scripture has preached likewise concerning the Lord, nothing at all must be rejected by us which pertains to us; and we read that “every Scripture suitable for edification is divinely inspired.” By the yews [Jews?] it may now seem to have been rejected for that (very) reason, just like all the other (portions) nearly which tell of Christ. Nor, of course, is this fact wonderful, that they did not receive some Scriptures which spake of Him whom even in person, speaking in their presence, they were not to receive. To these considerations is added the fact that Enoch possesses a testimony in the Apostle Jude. [emphasis added for emphasis]

While this is highly speculative and no historical or manuscript evidence is provided; it, at least, shows knowledge of the work’s existence. Also, this is an important passage because many people claim that the Book of Enoch survived the flood upon the Ark as it was entrusted to Noah. Of course, the Book of Enoch 68:1 has Noah stating just about as much:

And after that my grandfather Enoch gave me all the secrets in the book and in the parables which had been given to him, and he put them together for me in the words of the book of the parables.

Yet, Tertullian is only speculating as much along with speculating that it could have been re-written post flood. In other words, he knows of its existence and, apparently, nothing solidly of its history.

ORIGEN (203-250 AD):

De Principiis, chap Iii:

That all things were created by God, and that there is no creature which exists but has derived from Him its being, is established from many declarations of Scripture…in the book of Enoch also we have similar descriptions.

De Principiis, chap Iv:

But some one will perhaps inquire whether we can obtain out of Scripture any grounds for such an understanding of the subject. Now I think some such view is indicated in the Psalms, when the prophet says, “My eyes have seen your imperfection;” (Psalm 139:16) by which the mind of the prophet, examining with keener glance the first principles of things, and separating in thought and imagination only between matter and its qualities, perceived the imperfection of God, which certainly is understood to be perfected by the addition of qualities. Enoch also, in his book, speaks as follows: “I have walked on even to imperfection;” which expression I consider may be understood in a similar manner, viz., that the mind of the prophet proceeded in its scrutiny and investigation of all visible things, until it arrived at that first beginning in which it beheld imperfect matter existing without “qualities.” For it is written in the same book of Enoch, “I beheld the whole of matter;” which is so understood as if he had said: “I have clearly seen all the divisions of matter which are broken up from one into each individual species either of men, or animals, or of the sky, or of the sun, or of all other things in this world.”

Note that Origen’s quotes of “Enoch” are not found in the 1 Enoch / Ethiopian Enoch so he may have had some other version or otherwise simile of the text. It is also possible that he was misquoting the Enochian text as he so very clearly misreads Psalms as stating that God is, or was, imperfect.

Second, it is known from the discovery of Hebrew and Aramaic manuscripts of Enoch found in the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran that there are large portions of text that are not present in the Ethiopic manuscripts. (See 4Q209 and 4Q211) So it is also possible that he was quoting from portions of Enoch that may have not been translated into the Ethiopic text, and hence have not survived to today.

Commentary on John, book VI:25:

Let us look at the words of the Gospel now before us. “Jordan” means “their going down.” The name “Jared” is etymologically akin to it, if I may say so; it also yields the meaning “going down;” for Jared was born to Maleleel, as it is written in the Book of Enoch—if any one cares to accept that book as sacred—in the days when the sons of God came down to the daughters of men. Under this descent some have supposed that there is an enigmatical reference to the descent of souls into bodies, taking the phrase “daughters of men” as a tropical expression for this earthly tabernacle.

Here, Origen was not focusing on the Book of Enoch and so this quotations suffices for our context; he is aware of its contents and may be implying that some do and some do not accept it as sacred.

Contra Celsus, book V:

Chap LIV:

Even against him, then, who maintained that Jesus was the only one that came from God to men, it would be in vain for Celsus to quote the statements regarding the descent of other angels, seeing Apelles discredits, as we have already mentioned, the miraculous narratives of the Jewish Scriptures; and much more will he decline to admit what Celsus has adduced, from not understanding the contents of the book of Enoch…the books which bear the name Enoch do not at all circulate in the Churches as divine…

Chap LV:

Then, mixing up and confusing whatever he had at any time heard, or had anywhere found written—whether held to be of divine origin among Christians or not—he adds: “The sixty or seventy who descended together were cast under the earth, and were punished with chains.” And he quotes (as from the book of Enoch, but without naming it) the following:  “And hence it is that the tears of these angels are warm springs,”—a thing neither mentioned nor heard of in the Churches of God!

Note that the refers here to the books (plural) of Enoch which may refer to 1, 2 and 3 Enoch (or the 336 books that The Book of the Secrets of Enoch claims Enoch wrote) and it is thus unclear which ones he is stating are not circulate in the Churches as divine[ly inspired].

Origen as Critic and Interpreter:

…while Origen thus gives a primary place to the books of the Hebrew Canon, he expressly defends, in his letter to Africanus, the use of the additions found in the Alexandrine LXX. (cf. p. 122)…He quotes the Book of Enoch (c. Cels. v. 55; de Princ. iv. 35 ; Hom. in Num. xxviii. 2)…and it is probably to books of this class that his interesting remarks on “apocryphal” books in Pyol. in Cant. p. 325 L. refer.

In the next and final segment we will consider Anatolius of Alexandria, Jerome and some statement by Alfred Loisy.

Adolf Hitler – Nazism – Communism

Are all university areas the same—zeal without knowledge!?!?

This guy was wearing a Stalin t-shirt. I said, “Stalin! Really!”

He said, “Yeah [smile], he was a monster but he didn’t do anything to affect me or my family.”

Well then, in accordance to this pseudo-reasoning, if he and his family was not effected by Nazism then he would proudly wear an Adolf Hitler t-shirt or, a Mao Zedong t-shirt, or…etc.

So, I reminded him of the quoted from Martin Niemöller about the Holocaust:
