Richard Dawkins’ Explanation Fallacy

As is the case with much New Atheist literature; well-within-the-box-atheist-groupthink-talking-points are passed off as silver bullets, loaded to finally destroy theistic arguments.
Yet, just as often the silver bullets are smoke and mirrors and snake oil—the exciting but fallacious stuff of fiction.

This is not to say that fiction is not useful; it certainly can be fun, exciting and mind expanding. Yet, the issue here is that fiction or faction (part fact and part fiction; the most useful sort of deception) is that Richard Dawkins proposes his very own particular and peculiar standard (which any philosopher or scientist can see right through) and then leaves it to the hoi polloi to utilize whilst refusing to debate the issue in scholarly settings with worthy adversaries. Thus, the Explanation Fallacy is ubiquitously promulgated in cyberspace by those quite pleased to fuel their emotional rejection of God (which is what atheism is) with any bit of wood shavings.

So, what is the Explanation Fallacy?

Richard Dawkins asserts that appealing to God as the explanation for the universe (life, etc.) is fallacious because, in his view, it is no explanation at all. Why is this? Because, so he mis-reasons, it leaves God unexplained making God no explanation at all. Now you have to explain God and explain the explanation and the explanation’s explanation, etc. ad infinitum. In this view; you cannot appeal to God because God is even more unexplained, and perhaps unexplainable, than the thing you sought to explain in the first place namely, the universe, life, etc.

For example, in The Blind Watchmaker Richard Dawkins wrote,

To explain the origin of the DNA/protein machine by invoking a supernatural Designer is to explain precisely nothing, for it leaves unexplained the origin of the Designer.

Before offering an answer we ought to consider the question. Is the question valid? Is the arguments valid? Is the premise valid? Is the demand valid? Etc.

The fallacy is demanding “the” explanation in the first place: “the” referring to one, to one and only, to one and only single explanation. For example, if I am wearing a blue shirt and someone asks why my shirt is blue—to explain why my shirt is blue, what is the explanation as to why my shirt is blue—there is no such thing as a single answer. Context may determine which sort of answer they seek yet the explanations, generically, are manifold.
For instance: my shirt is blue due to the properties of light. It is blue due to the cloth having been dyed in a certain mixture of pigments. Blue due to market forces whereby it was determined by the manufacturer that people were purchasing this style of shirt in blue more than in other colors. Due to the fact that it is the one I pulled out of my closet this morning. And on it goes. There is no one, single, only explanation.

That this is the case is not only obvious to those outside of Richard Dawkins’ choir, outside of the box, outside of the cult of personality; this has been pointed out a myriad of times in a myriad of ways. Examples ranging from archeology to alien artifacts come to mind.
If you find what appear to be primitive tools you can logically conclude that they were designed and manufactured by intelligent personages—by living and capable beings. You would not have to give up this hypothesis or be ridiculed for it if you were asked to explain the personages and were unable because they are simply unknown to us, etc. Indeed, you would not have to abandon your hypothesis in favor of a hypothesis that explained the tools by appealing to the natural weathering of rocks or what have you.
If you travel to the dark side of the Moon and find a marquee stating, “Earthlings go home!” You may rightly conclude the work of aliens. However, if, upon being challenged to explain the aliens, you found yourself at a loss, you would not have appeal to weathering, etc.

If an explanation is to be rejected unless there is an explanation for/of the explanation then this would set up an infinite regress of unexplained/unexplainable pseudo-explanation and the endeavors of science would come to a screeching halt or would not get going in the first place.

Now, if the explanation fallacy is so clearly fallacious why is it so popular? Because it is useful. It plays an important part in polemics as it allows one to hold on to a beloved belief no matter how fallacious it is shown to be. You see; its appeal is not logical or scientific but emotional.

No matter what the explanation is, it can be said to not have reached the status of being the explanation—it will be said to not satisfy due to this and that. Meanwhile, what would be considered the explanation remains aloof, undefined or will turn out to be some bit of atheist theology, “If God was then God would…and would not…should…and should not…” etc. all based on the individual atheists personally preferred, personally authored theology.

Let us consider one example of God as explanation: God as explanation for how life came about.
Some say that “God created life” is no explanation at all. It most certainly is an explanation. But how can it be? After ally; it is not an explanation about how God created life. Indeed, and that is the very point; there are different sorts of explanations. Perhaps it would be useful to think of the questions of “Why?” and “How?” Why is there life? Because God created it. How did God create life? We do not know—but scientists are working on it. “Why?” is quite well answered by appealing to the philosophic argument from contingency; that the seemingly infinite regress of one form of life coming from another previously existing form of life is, in reality, a finite regress which logically ends (or, begins) with a being in which life was intrinsic.

“How?” is a different category of question and explanation and is asking for step by step cause and effect sorts of answers.

Thus, saying something such as, “God did it” is an explanation but does not satisfy every possible way of explaining. Likewise, appealing to the time of the gaps, the matter of the gaps, the chance of the gaps, the it just is, of the gaps is also inadequate.

Therefore, the Explanation Fallacy is popular because it is emotionally useful yet, it is illogical and unscientific.

Nephilim in Adam Clarke’s commentary for Jude

From Adam Clarke’s (1760-1832 AD) commentary:

The angels which kept not their first estate – Την ἑαυτων αρχην Their own principality. The words may be understood of their having invaded the office or dignity of some others, or of their having by some means forfeited their own. This is spoken of those generally termed the fallen angels; but from what they fell, or from what cause or for what crime, we know not. It is generally thought to have been pride; but this is mere conjecture. One thing is certain; the angels who fell must have been in a state of probation, capable of either standing or falling, as Adam was in paradise. They did not continue faithful, though they knew the law on which they stood; they are therefore produced as the second example.

As to “from what they fell, or from what cause or for what crime” Jude is telling us as does 2 Peter 2.

These Angels “kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation” which is whey they are “reserved in everlasting chains under darkness” which will result in them undergoing “the judgment of the great day.” But what’fer? Peter add a timeline reference to Noah and the flood and both he and Jude direct us to the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah which Jude details more explicitly than Peter as pertaining to “fornication, and going after strange flesh.”

The references to fallen Angles, Noah/flood as timelines and sexual sins is why they appear to be interpreting the Genesis 6 affair.

Adam Clarke further notes:

The judgment of the great day, – The final judgment, when both angels and men shall receive their eternal doom. See on 2 Peter 2:4; (note). In Sohar Exod., fol. 8, c. 32: “Rabbi Isaac asked: Suppose God should punish any of his heavenly family, how would he act? R. Abba answered: He would send them into the flaming river, take away their dominion, and put others in their place.” Some suppose that the saints are to occupy the places from which these angels, by transgression, fell.

FYI: “Sohar” is aka Zohar and refers to a primary text of Rabbinic mysticism dating from the 13th c. AD. In any case, this may pertain to 1 Corinthians 6:3’s statement, “Know ye not that we shall judge angels?”

“Porn For Bibles” and How “Atheists Devise Creative New Way to Alienate People”

A friend once stated/asked “Atheists just want to argue all the time don’t they?”

I responded to the likes of “How should I know?”

Well, I have been writing contra atheism since 2005 AD so I should know.
Thus, it may be so and it may not be; I recognize that I am dealing with a skewed sample. I post arguments and my atheist readers want to counter argue thus, I attract those who want to argue back to my argument.

Sadly, there are atheists out three giving the general populace the wrong message and just as sadly, these can often come across as the norm. This is not fair although the more that atheists define “atheism” in terms of “anti-theism” I do not see how they will escape this perception; when your movement is premised upon negativism there is not much hope for it but to encourage the naturally negative.

Just as Atheist Activist raised ire by encouraging the destruction of road side memorials (see here) Atheist Agenda are hard at work endearing prejudice by trading college students pornography for Bibles and other “holy books.”

It was Hot Air’s resident atheist Allahpundit who wrote that “Atheists devise creative new way to alienate people” (March 2, 2010) and noted:

…wherever there’s an opportunity to antagonize an innocent believer, we’ll be there. I’m giving you this for three reasons. One: In case you’ve ever wondered why, even in a post-9/11 world, atheists rank below Muslims in terms of traits the public dislikes in a politician, wonder no longer. Two: As dumb and distasteful as I find this, I can’t resist the dilemma it presents between acting on principle and doing the politically wise thing…I usually opt for the “politically wise” route and am derided for it in the comments. These tools are acting on principle too. Should they bottle it up instead to avoid alienating people, or is principle always the way to go?

Three: Can it be that Hot Air hasn’t had an atheism post in more than a month? What’s happened to this site?

At least when it comes to the Bible, Atheist Agenda does not seem to understand basic context. They claim that the pornography they are offering is no worse than certain stories in the Bible. Well, a snuff film may be no worse than that which local newspapers report every single day but there is a context for both; one is gratuitous and one placed the immoral acts with context—description versus prescription and so on.
In this regard, I do not know whether to be pleased that Atheist Agenda members are in college or not. It would be nice to think that through the institutions of higher learning such obvious points would be elucidated to them. However, given the climate of colleges today they are likely to merely be encouraged.

So, mild mannered atheists everywhere—and we know you are there and you know who you are—I am very, very sorry for the atheist who give you a bad name.
An example from my side of the debate; the one and only thing I know about Pat Robertson is that once every couple of years he says something preposterous. He is on television five days per week, or more, he makes hundreds of thousands of statements every year but—he gets secular publicity only when his foot goes right down his throat and then his statements are shoved down mine.

Sadly, it is the same for atheists particularly as of recent years; the celebrity atheists are often viewed as such, as leaders of a movement because of their outrageous statements.

Neither side should have to personally pay the price for the excesses of the antagonists who share their label.

The Book of Eli – the Movie and the Bible

Earlier this year the movie “The Book of Eli” began being shot in New Mexico; is due to be released on January 15, 2010 AD. It is a little difficult to get much info on this movie and some descriptions seem to conflict but: the movie is set in the post-apocalyptic year 2043 AD. It appears to be set circa 30 years after a final war which caused a hole in the ozone layer and humanity is left in a bit of a mess. The movie stars Denzel Washington as “Eli,” Malcolm McDowell as “Lombardi,” Gary Oldman as “Carnegie,” Mila Kunis as “Solara,” et al.

The premise is that Eli guards The Book of Eli (do not if he wrote it or why his name is also that of the book) that is said to hold the knowledge which could redeem the world. Carnegie and his posse are out to get The Book of Eli and the shenanigans ensue. Carnegie’s adopted daughter, Solara, ends up becoming Eli’s guide. The official Warner Brothers film description states that Eli is “Driven by this commitment and guided by his belief in something greater than himself.”

Actually, judging by more recent commercials; it appears that “the book” is the Bible and The Book of Eli is his story. Although, knowing Hollywood if the book is, indeed, the Bible it will turn out to be hollowed out and contain Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth—think about it: a hole in the ozone layer and the Earth is in bad shape! Also, all that it takes to go from “Eli” to “Al” is a copyist error! Perhaps Bart Ehrman will write “Misquoting Eli.”

Denzel Washington stated:

there’s the classic battle of good and evil in this. God and the devil, if you will, and I found that interesting […] We all at some point are in search of something and higher power, whatever you want to call it, the meaning of life, you know? […] I know I was, especially at even my son’s age, in my 20s, and … dabbling in Eastern philosophies and yoga and Buddhism and Christianity and Islam. I kind of touched them all, you know, just trying to figure out the meaning of life or, if nothing else, figure myself out. So I think there’s that. There is a thirst for that. … As a classic battle between God and the devil, or even more specifically for the character of [Eli], I mean, he’s five days’ walk from the Promised Land, if you will, for taking this book where it belongs, and literally all hell breaks loose.1

An interesting thought experiment is to juxtapose the premise behind The Book of Eli and the Bible and consider them in more ways that just a redemptive message being guarded by some, though not kept secret, while others failingly attempt to discredit it.

Let us imagine that in such a post-apocalyptic world the internet is dead and gone (NO!!!!!!!) as well as all other electronic devices thus; no electronic Bibles, no eBooks, no MP3 audio books, no hand/palm devices, etc. (my nephew predicts that someday YouTube, Twitter and Facebook will merge into one ginormous site called YouTwitFace).

So, we are left with printed texts alone. Still, there are millions upon millions of Bibles in print but let us imagine that somehow they have all (and in the original Greek “all” means “all”—that is a little apologetics humor) have been destroyed. What now?

Well, for the Old Testament we have some 10,000 manuscripts dated from 250 BC to 1100 AD.
What we learn about the Old Testament when we consider the manuscript evidence, roughly considering our modern version versus the oldest manuscripts is that with the passage of over 1,000 years we find only minor changes and no change to the message. The bottom line is that the Old Testament has more manuscripts, earlier manuscripts, better copied manuscripts, and more reliably recorded history than any other book of its time. If you cannot trust the Old Testament, then you would have to throw out all of ancient history.

As for the New Testament we have more manuscripts and earlier manuscripts which have been more accurately copied than any other book from antiquity. We have circa 5,700 Greek manuscripts with a total of circa 24,000 when we include other languages while most other books of that time have 10-20 manuscripts. The one that comes second to the New Testament is Homer’s Iliad for which we have 643 manuscripts. The New Testament is far and away even from the one that comes in second—it is not a close second as the difference is some 23,357 manuscripts.

Now, let us further consider that the over 34,000 manuscripts for the Bible have all been destroyed. What now?
We could take the writings of the Early Church Fathers—their books, commentaries, sermons and correspondence—in which they quote the New Testament and we could reconstruct the New Testament with the exception of 11 verses (verses that do not affect any doctrine). The writings of the early church fathers are from within 250-300 years of the original writings (which is one fifth less than almost all secular literature). We have 36,289 quotations of the New Testament from the early church fathers, some are 2 or 3 chapters long.

If Eli is protecting the Bible, those who are after it would cease chasing him and would be able to reconstruct it.
