Darwin Day petitions to Obama administration

“Darwin Day” is currently an unofficial commemoration of Charles Darwin who systematized the philosophy of evolution as a subset of the science of biology.

Darwin Day is celebrated on a date based on Charles Darwin’s birth which took place on February 12, 1809 AD.

Representative Rush Holt (D-NJ) has proposed H. Res. 41 to Congress:
Expressing support for designation of February 12, 2013, as Darwin Day and recognizing the importance of science of science in the betterment of humanity.

The text of the resolution specifies:
Whereas Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by the mechanism of natural selection, together with the monumental amount of scientific evidence he compiled to support it, provides humanity with a logical and intellectually compelling explanation for the diversity of life on Earth; Whereas the validity of Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection is further strongly supported by the modern understanding of the science of genetics; Whereas it has been the human curiosity and ingenuity exemplified by Darwin that has promoted new scientific discoveries that have helped humanity solve many problems and improve living conditions; Whereas the advancement of science must be protected from those unconcerned with the adverse impacts of global warming and climate change; Whereas the teaching of creationism in some public schools compromises the scientific and academic integrity of the United States education systems; Whereas Charles Darwin is a worthy symbol of scientific advancement on which to focus and around which to build a global celebration of science and humanity intended to promote a common bond among all of Earth’s peoples; and

Whereas February 12, 2013, is the anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin in 1809 and would be an appropriate date to designate as Darwin Day: Now, therefore, be it…

In short, the resolution ties in the philosophy of Darwinian evolution with global warming, climate change and scientific compromise via creationism in some public schools.

Conversely, the petition section of the White House’s website is currently listing a petition to the Obama administration to, “Deny any motion of Congress to designate February 12, 2013 as Darwin Day” in the following terms:
Whereas a 2012 Gallup poll found that 46% of Americans express some form of opposition to the General Theory of Evolution, a declaration of a national Darwin Day would not be representative of nearly half the US population.

This would be tantamount to the government taking a position in the controversial debate of creation versus evolution. Regardless of which view one holds to be correct, this is outside of the government’s role in U.S. society, where toleration of differing views has always been held to be a virtue. But when the government takes a stand on these issues which should be debated among the population, this can be needlessly divisive.

We ask President Obama to recognize the differing views among the population deny any motion to declare February 12, 2013 as Darwin Day.

This is a debate that has been ongoing since 1859 AD when Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life.

Currently groups on both sides of the issue are continuing the debate in various forms. For example there is the International Darwin Day Foundation which seeks just that, to establish Darwin Day as an international observance. There is also the Question Evolution! Campaign which seeks just that, to have people question the philosophy.

Alchemical Hollywood in “The Brass Teapot” movie

“The Brass Teapot” movie was released in 2013 AD. It was directed by Ramaa Mosley and stars Juno Temple as Alice, Michael Angarano as John, et al.

It is based on a comic book series, “about mid-twenty year old couple who, in these difficult economic times, finds a mysterious, magical brass teapot which makes them money but at a surprising price. After realizing the teapots powers, John and Alice must decide how far they will go to fulfill their dream.”

the2bbrass2bteapot2b2-3616373

The teapot has a hexagram on its side (a six pointed star often wrongly termed a “Star of David”). When Alice and John take it to the Antiques Roadshow the appraiser notes “the alchemy of the metal.”

the2bbrass2bteapot-9213477

We are told that “The legend of the teapot first appeared in folklore around the time of Christ’s crucifixion.”
We are told that the teapot has not been seen since 1945 AD (it may be a 4+5=9 number of the beast issue since 6+6+6=18 and 1+8=9 according to occult numerology).

the2bbrass2bteapot2b3-6925533

“The Theosophist Society” is after the teapot as are Hassidic (“Orthodox”) Jews. In reality, Theosophy is an occult cult that was established by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and Rabbinic Judaism in the form of Hassidic Judaism (and as opposed to biblical Judaism) contains the occult element of the Kabbalah.

But why are they after it? Well, the teapot has a magic (or, magick) quality to it: it produces money from within it in reaction to pain and suffering. Thus, Alice and John engage in self-hurting including that which John terms “violent sex” including S&M.

Now, guess what the movie has the Jews do: they steal the money but leave teapot behind as they are aware of the dire consequences of that which comes with dealings with it.

At one point “the teapot doesn’t like paying like it used to” thus, they have to take the self-injury up a notch.

They end up realizing that the teapot will pay out due to anyone within its proximity is injured—pain, suffering, etc. Thus, they hang out at an MMA fight, a tattoo parlor, at a hospital where birth is being given, etc.

the2bbrass2bteapot2b1-2965089

At another point John notes that Alice is “on the verge of vehicular homicide” when she almost runs over a homeless person on purpose.

They then end up realizing that the teapot will pay out due to emotional pain thus, they begin to make each other feel miserable, saying hurtful things. Alice calls it “psychological warfare.”

They hurt each other in this way by revealing hurtful secrets.

Well, it is meant to be a feel good story so in the end they give the teapot to the Theosophical Society who throw it into the ocean.

Thus, it is a psychological warfare based tale about feeding the magickal money monster (see Tracy Twyman and the Baphomet bankers) with pain and suffering.

It is also occult alchemical mystical tale as Alice and John undergo a transformation of the self via literal occult means.

Does Size Matter?

No, not to God who creates a universe so vast that it makes us wonder why He is concerned about us and yet, authors tremendous amounts on information which He packages in a cell, “the DNA in a sperm cell is super-condensed and compacted into a highly dense.”

This is an interesting perspective showing the size of a carbon atom beginning with a comparison to the size of a coffee bean—from millimeters to picometers.

The slide is from the University of Utah Genetic Science Learning Center.

Also, on their Inside a Cell page you can bulls eye/x-ray inside of a cell and then click for a close up animated video.

Their The Evolution of the Cell page tells a quaint Darwinian tall tale (note the abrupt jumps, what is not stated and the assumptions).

Additionally, I will add beguiled since Eve stated, “The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat” which is supposed to mean that Satan sexually seduced her and they had sex.

Devil in Augustine of Hippo, part 2

Herein we continue, from part 1, considering info on the Devil in Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD). The fuller complete result consists of quotations of those sections within the text that refer to Angels, Cherubim, Seraphim, Devil, Satan, demons, serpent and dragon. The point is not to elucidate these references but to provide relevant partial quotations and citations. See my section on Angels here, Cherubim and Seraphim here, Satan here and Demons here.

Devil in Augustine of Hippo’s The City of God, Books III, IV, V, IX, X and XI.

Book III
Chapter 18 And no wonder; for when they were renewed, the great abundance of dying men made all hell rejoice at its riches, and give itself up to sport: for certainly the ferocious wars, and disastrous quarrels, and bloody victories— now on one side, and now on the other— though most calamitous to men, afforded great sport and a rich banquet to the devils.

Book IV
Chapter 26 If that was a fiction, he would have been moved to anger; but if he was delighted with the representation of his crimes, even although fabulous, then, when he happened to be worshipped, who but the devil could be served?

Book V
Chapter 10 And when I speak of the wills of Angels, I mean either the wills of good Angels, whom we call the Angels of God, or of the wicked Angels, whom we call the Angels of the devil, or demons.

Chapter 18 If, therefore, for the liberty of dying men, and for the desire of human praise which is sought after by mortals, sons could be put to death by a father, what great thing is it, if, for the true liberty which has made us free from the dominion of sin, and death, and the devil—not through the desire of human praise, but through the earnest desire of fleeing men, not from King Tarquin, but from demons and the prince of the demons—we should, I do not say put to death our sons, but reckon among our sons Christ’s poor ones?

Book IX
Chapter 21 The devils themselves knew this manifestation of God so well, that they said to the Lord though clothed with the infirmity of flesh, “What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us before the time?”

Book X
Chapter 11 We should sympathize with this great philosopher in the difficulty he experienced in acquainting himself with and confidently assailing the whole fraternity of devils, which any Christian old woman would unhesitatingly describe and most unreservedly detest.

Chapter 22 For the devil cannot conquer or subdue any but those who are in league with sin; and therefore he is conquered in the name of Him who assumed humanity, and that without sin, that Himself being both Priest and Sacrifice, He might bring about the remission of sins, that is to say, might bring it about through the Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, by whom we are reconciled to God, the cleansing from sin being accomplished.

Book XI Chapter 13 For what Catholic Christian does not know that no new devil will ever arise among the good Angels, as he knows that this present devil will never again return into the fellowship of the good?…the good Angels were assured of the eternity of their blessedness after the perdition of the others; unless, possibly, some one may say that the words of the Lord about the devil “He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth,” are to be understood as if he was not only a murderer from the beginning of the human race…John says thus becomes intelligible: “The devil sins from the beginning,” — that is, from the time he was created he refused righteousness, which none but a will piously subject to God can enjoy.

Whoever adopts this opinion at least disagrees with those heretics the Manichees, and with any other pestilential sect that may suppose that the devil has derived from some adverse evil principle a nature proper to himself. These persons are so befooled by error, that, although they acknowledge with ourselves the authority of the gospels, they do not notice that the Lord did not say, “The devil was naturally a stranger to the truth,” but “The devil abode not in the truth,” by which He meant us to understand that he had fallen from the truth, in which, if he had abode, he would have become a partaker of it, and have remained in blessedness along with the holy Angels.

Chapter 14 Moreover, as if we had been inquiring why the devil did not abide in the truth, our Lord subjoins the reason, saying, “because the truth is not in him.” Now, it would be in him had he abode in it.

Chapter 15 As for what John says about the devil, “The devil sins from the beginning” 1 John 3:8 they who suppose it is meant hereby that the devil was made with a sinful nature, misunderstand it; for if sin be natural, it is not sin at all. And how do they answer the prophetic proofs—either what Isaiah says when he represents the devil under the person of the king of Babylon, “How are you fallen, O Lucifer, son of the morning!”…And from this passage, “The devil sins from the beginning,” it is not to be supposed that he sinned from the beginning of his created existence, but from the beginning of his sin, when by his pride he had once commenced to sin. There is a passage, too, in the Book of Job, of which the devil is the subject: “This is the beginning of the creation of God, which He made to be a sport to His Angels,” which agrees with the psalm, where it is said, “There is that dragon which You have made to be a sport therein.” But these passages are not to lead us to suppose that the devil was originally created to be the sport of the Angels, but that he was doomed to this punishment after his sin.

Chapter 17 It is with reference to the nature, then, and not to the wickedness of the devil, that we are to understand these words, “This is the beginning of God’s handiwork;” for, without doubt, wickedness can be a flaw or vice only where the nature previously was not vitiated…Accordingly, He caused the devil (good by God’s creation, wicked by his own will) to be cast down from his high position, and to become the mockery of His Angels.

Chapter 23 In the second place, Origen, and all who think with him, ought to have seen that if it were the true opinion that the world was created in order that souls might, for their sins, be accommodated with bodies in which they should be shut up as in houses of correction, the more venial sinners receiving lighter and more ethereal bodies, while the grosser and graver sinners received bodies more crass and grovelling, then it would follow that the devils, who are deepest in wickedness, ought, rather than even wicked men, to have Earthly bodies, since these are the grossest and least ethereal of all. But in point of fact, that we might see that the deserts of souls are not to be estimated by the qualities of bodies, the wickedest devil possesses an ethereal body, while man, wicked, it is true, but with a wickedness small and venial in comparison with his, received even before his sin a body of clay.

In the next segment, we will consider more on the Devil in Augustine of Hippo.

Sam Harris: Mythunderstandings Part 2 of 7

Sam Harris charges theists with arrogance since, according to him:

“One of the monumental ironies of religious discourse can be found in the frequency with which people of faith praise themselves for their humility, while claiming to know facts about cosmology, chemistry and biology that no scientist knows.”1

Incidentally, we may note that we have responded to Sam Harris’ denial of the alleged myth that “Atheists are arrogant” in part six of my essay: Sam Harris-Myth Buster or Myth Maker?.
Firstly, Sam Harris should not think that no one can know something just because he does not know it-we have termed this: “the fallacy of presumed ubiquitous ignorance” or “the fallacy of presumed omni-ignorance.”

Secondly, let us offer some examples that will call into question whether Judeo-Christian believers are arrogant in the way that Sam Harris claims:

For millennia Jews and Christians claimed that the universe had a beginning. This was viewed, by some, as superstitious ignorance by the scientifically enlightened, to the point that some of them concocted, for example, the Steady State Theory. Then scientists “discovered” that the universe had a beginning.

Therefore, did Judeo-Christianity “claim” to know something that it did not know? Weren’t they right? Was it arrogant to do so? The most brilliant of modern scientists have discovered that the universe had a beginning, that it consists of time, space and matter, that it expands, that the Earth hangs of nothing, that it is spherical and that it possesses a hydrologic cycle and condensation, that the Pleiadian star system is bound together by mutual gravitational attraction, that that the Orion system has a “belt” (to name a few modern discoveries). Yet, can we really refer to something as a “discovery” if it has been known for millennia upon millennia?

The Bible states, “In the beginning God created_” this was the beginning of the universe (Genesis 1:1). It states, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth,” “beginning, ” “heavens” and “Earth” = time, space and matter.

2universe-5502308While some ancient cultures believed that the Earth was on the backs of elephants, turtles or was being held up by Atlas, the Bible refers to God as, “He who hangs the earth on nothing” (Job 26:7).

The Bible referred to God as, “He who sits above the circle of the earth” (Isaiah 40:22) not the flat plain of the Earth.

In the Bible God is said to have stretched out the universe, “_who stretches out the heavens like a curtain” (Psalm 104:2).

Hydrology is described thusly, “All rivers flow into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the river flows, there they flow again” (Ecclesiastes 1:7) and “For_the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there without watering the earth” (Isaiah 55:10).

Condensation thusly, “He draws up the drops of water, they distill rain from the mist, which the clouds pour down, they drip upon man abundantly” (Job 36:27-28).

The Pleiades and Orion are referred to in Job 38:31 (for more on this whilst responding to Prof. Richard Dawkins please see this essay).

Ultimately however, Sam Harris is setting up a straw man and skirting the issue (of his arguments in the above mentioned part six). When people refer to atheists are arrogant they are not referring to cosmology, chemistry or biology. One of the things that they are referring to is that, just as Sam Harris does, some atheists think that atheists are the enlightened, the rational, the intellectual, the scientific, the philosophic and certainly that atheists are right and everyone else is wrong, everyone else is ignorant and superstitious. Apparently, believing that no one made everything out of nothing is brilliant but believing that someone made everything out of nothing is ignorant.
