Under consideration is the article Giants of the Bible by Petri Paavola (note that I am quoting the English version of the article which contains very slightly broken English in places)—find all segments of this review here.
DESTRUCTION OF NEPHILIM NATIONS Paavola takes the concept of one or more incursions of fallen Angels post-flood to explain how/why, “God commanded to destroy the nations, who were after the flood descended from fallen angels and the nations which had adopted their habits…evil sins like burning their children in the fire as offerings to the idols. They lived violently, make contact with evil spirits, practiced unnatural sexual activities (homosexuality, bestiality).”
I would edit this to state that “God commanded to destroy the nations” because they nations adopted such habits whether due to influence by demons, due to fallen human nature—or, both. But we have no indication that there were/are any post-flood Nephilim, nor post-flood Nephilim genetics, etc.
So, at this point I will direct the interested reader to my article Did Caleb and the spies see Nephilim giants in the land? the succinct version of which is that the claim of Nephilim or Nephilim descendants in the land was part of a bad/evil report against which Caleb argued. Later in his life when Caleb relates the event he affirms having seen Anakim in the land (who are named after Anak the son of Arba) but does not mention the Nephilim. In short, reference to the Nephilim seems to have been part of a scare tactic which the spies employed in dissuading the people from doing that which God had commanded them to do which was to take the land.
Paavola writes, “If God would not have allowed to destroy these satanic nations, so it could be that today in the world someone would burn little children as offerings to idols.” Yet, today even in supposedly enlightened and advanced first world countries millions upon millions and millions of people may not burn little children as offerings to idols but certainly sacrifice them in a ritual called abortion.
We then come to an actual report about the Anakim as Deuteronomy 9 is quoted the key points of which are to hearken back to the reason the spies spied out the land in the first place, “pass over Jordan…go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fenced up to heaven, A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak!” Thus, the Anakim were intimidating which is why God reassures them that He is leading them, is with them, etc., “the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee” and God affirms that He is doing so due to “the wickedness of these nations” and not due to Nephilim genetics. Paavola recognizes this in writing, “God said that Israelites don’t possess this land for their righteousness, but for the reason of the wickedness of the giant nations” but he adds the bit about post-flood Nephilim.
But the Anakim are “tall” yes indeed. The Bible also refers to people who are “very tall” and yet, just as with the word giant, this only means just that: tall, very tall and taller than the average (over 5.5 ft.). After all, when we read that their fences are “up to heaven” just how tall were those fences? Clearly, the point is that they were very powerful, well protected, well equipped, etc.
Petri Paavola then writes, “Anakims (giant nation)” but this only means a nation of taller than average personages. And if you are wondering about the Hebrews being as grasshoppers in comparison, see the article on Caleb. He also refers to “the seed (giant gene) of the evil spirit” yet, I am not aware of a giant gene rather, we know that gigantism is caused by an overactive pituitary gland.
Paavola’s view becomes more problematic as he concludes that “As consequence of sexual intercourse between evil spirits and the daughters of men on the earth born demonic human race.” The slightly broken English may make is a little unclear yet, he goes on to make is very clear. His view is that there is a 100% human race but there is also a “demonic human race.” This can become very, very dangerous since, as he puts it, the demonic human race’s
Goal is “to corrupt and ruin the moral of the people in the world by satanic sins. God didn’t allow this, but He destroyed satanic seed wiping them away from the earth…a reason why God destroyed the giants, because they were descendants of satanic seed.”
You can see how this can very quickly lead to a call for a literal race war: 100% humans versus demonic human race. Now, I am not claiming to know that Paavola is driving at such an event but only that some may move in that direction. In fact, I think that he previously argued against such actions in stating, and again I quote as is meaning sic., “God commanded to destroy…the nations that had adopted their satanic sins. This command was given at a certain time and concern to certain nations, not all nations. During the time of [t]he New Covenant is not this kind of command.”
