While much could be, and has been, written on this subject, this series of articles will consider three main topics: 1) Extra-Terrestrial Hybridization, 2) Zechariah’s Flying Scroll and 3) Ezekiel’s Vision Wheels.
It is always advisable to define terminology before offering an answer to a question. In this case we are asking, “Are there extra-terrestrial aliens & UFOs in the Bible?”
Extra-terrestrial merely means non, not from or from beyond the Earth (terra).
Aliens can mean strange, unusual (or, illegal migrant human personages) but in this context is indicative of sentient, intelligent, volitional beings from elsewhere in the universe (or other universes as per the multiverse theory; about which you can watch videos here).
UFO simply means Unidentified Flying Object and so could, literally, be anything from an airplane to a bird and from a satellite to swamp-gas reflecting off of Venus…or, something. However, in common pop-occultural parlance it is used to refer to extra-terrestrial alien spacecraft.
It is important to be aware that one can conclude that there are extra-terrestrial aliens and UFOs in the Bible by making eisegetical arguments. This means that one comes to the text with a preconceived notion that one reads into the text. In other words, one forces the text to say that which one wants to hear, that which one already presupposes.
One popular tactic or approach in claiming that people of days gone by would have lacked the ability to adequately, at least to our modern sensibilities, describe extra-terrestrial aliens and UFOs. Thus, when they saw a UFO/spaceship they would have described it as a fiery chariot, said that YVHV was causing thunderous sounds and shaking the ground, etc.
Moreover, they would have described actually extra-terrestrial aliens as angles (even though angels do not have wings and just look like humans), YHVH, other gods, etc.
Perhaps the biggest problem with this, most popular, approach is that it is an argument from silence that merely overlays a preconception upon texts. In other words, it is merely to pick and choose that which one think one can apply to one’s preferred views. It is to not explain anything but only to offer a modern day concept to an ancient text. However, the question is what is wrong with that; perhaps, we are able to finally discern that which the text was stating.
Well, the problem is that it is merely un-contextual (disregards historical, cultural and grammatical context) speculation; it does not explain but only explains away. It does not consider that which the text is actually stating, within the immediate and greater context.
For example, anywhere that something in the Bible is flying, makes loud sounds, involves fire a UFO misinterpretation is applied to bits and pieces of texts.
In the following segment we will get into specific texts and see how bits and pieces are accepted as extra-terrestrial aliens and UFO related while the point of the text, that which actually gives it meaning, is disregarded.
EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL HYBRIDIZATION
We must note the fact that, in fact, it is a fact that the Bible does, indeed, refer to extra-terrestrials descending to Earth, mating with humans and producing hybrid (half human, half extra-terrestrial) offspring.
Genesis 6:1-5 states:
Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Keep in mind that as we noted in the first segment, “Extra-terrestrial merely means non, not from or from beyond the Earth (terra).” It does not necessarily refer to beings that travel to Earth in spaceships from other planets.
Note that term “sons of God” is, in Hebrew, benei ‘elohim or bene ‘elim. Within the, Hebrew, context of the Old Testament; these are beings that come before YHVH and along with whom comes satan: “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them” (Job 1:6).
The sons of God are generally defined as being angels. Keep in mind that angles do not have wings and look just like human males. On the other hand, satan is not an angel (is not a fallen angel) but is a cherub (Ezekiel 28:14). The cherubim is not a kind of angel but is another category of being (as are the seraphim, who have six wings). Cherubs, as per a text from Ezekiel that we will review in future segments, have four faces and four wings, “Their legs were straight and their feet were like a calf’s hoof, and they gleamed like burnished bronze. Under their wings on their four sides were human hands (Ezekiel 1:7-8).
The faces are described as one of ‘adam which means man or human, ‘ariy which is a lion, nesher which is an eagle, vulture (or, more specifically, a griffon-vulture) and showr which is a bull or ox. That is as per Ezekiel 1:10 while Ezekiel 10:14 lists the faces as being of an ‘adam, ‘ariy, nesher and not a showr but a keruwb which is cherub in Hebrew. Well, what does it mean that one of the cherub’s face is the face of a cherub?
This may very well simply be a case of copying error. The scribe/copyist may have committed what is known in the business as a “parablepsis owing to homoioteleuton or homoiarkton.” These technical terms refer to a copying error that occurs when one is reads a word on the original text, looks away to write it down and then looks back but accidentally ends up in a slightly different place in the manuscript. In Ezekiel chapter 10 the word cherub appears 21 times and so a scribe/copyist could have simply written down the word cherub twice whilst missing the word showr.
This is all just for the sake of descriptive details. In any regard, are the sons of God angels or are they angels, cherubim, seraphim, et al (these are all different categories of beings)? Well, satan (the cherub) is not necessarily identified as being a son of God but as tagging along, as it were, with them yet, perhaps some will argue that all who came to God were sons of God and satan just happens to be mentioned by name.
Considering that angles look like human males it is most likely that it is they who are described as sons of God as it is they who came to Earth, married and copulated with human women (in other words, they have the necessary, shall we say, equipment—capiche?).
So, in deed, within the Bible extra-terrestrials did descend to Earth, interact with human, taught humans occult (literally secret or hidden) concepts and created a hybrid form of being. These beings are referred to in the Genesis text as “mighty men” which is translated as such from the actual repetition of a Hebrew word so that the Hebrew text reads, “gibbowr gibbowr” and thus, they are known as the Gibbowrim or simply Giborim (im is simply the Hebrew manner whereby to denote masculine plural—ot is feminine plural).
The name/title of these hybrids is Nephilim and they were giborim. Tracking down what they were and what they did would take us well beyond the context of this article as it would take us into further linguistics pertaining to the term Nephilim and just what made them mighty; giantism, etc.
The take away lesson is that it was due to this hybridization event that, apparently, Nephilim DNA kept being spread by their, in turn, copulating with humans to the point that, “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Thus, the great deluge, the worldwide flood, came about due to having to do away with the massive genetic corruption that had occurred (for more on this see Was Noah genetically “perfect in his generation”?).
ZECHARIAH’S FLYING SCROLL
The issue with the Zechariah text, chapter 5, is that it is claimed that he witnessed what has come to be termed cigar shape, thus cylindrical, UFOs or even what are known as rods (although, rods are thought to be circa 4-5 feet long or smaller).
Here is the relevant text, “I lifted up my eyes again and looked, and behold, there was a flying scroll.” So, there you have it a scroll is a rolled up manuscript which looks cylindrical when it is thus rolled and it was flying. But, actually, a scroll is a long flat series of papyrus (or other materials) sheets that are interconnected (think of a long rectangle. It is rolled up to be stored and when read, the relevant portion is unfurled whilst the two ends remain rolled.
Note how the text continues, “And he said to me, “What do you see?” And I answered, “I see a flying scroll; its length is twenty cubits and its width ten cubits” (circa 30X15 feet). The fact that he could discern its size means that it was not rolled up or, it unfurled as it approached him (although, the text does not envisage this) so either way there is no reason to misidentify it as a cylindrical cigar shaped UFO.
Note how the text follows, “Then he said to me, ‘This is the curse that is going forth over the face of the whole land; surely everyone who steals will be purged away according to the writing on one side, and everyone who swears will be purged away according to the writing on the other side.’”
Thus, this scrolls was, as it were, an indictment and Zechariah could read the front and back of it.
Ah, but that is not the end of it as the text continues:
“I will make it go forth,” declares the LORD of hosts, “and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of the one who swears falsely by My name; and it will spend the night within that house and consume it with its timber and stones.”
Then the angel who was speaking with me went out and said to me, “Lift up now your eyes and see what this is going forth.” I said, “What is it?” And he said, “This is the ephah going forth.” Again he said, “This is their appearance in all the land (and behold, a lead cover was lifted up); and this is a woman sitting inside the ephah.”
So forget the scroll as now you really have something with which to work: a “woman” is flying around a spaceship called an “ephah” which even had a metallic cockpit lid.
However, the text continues, “Then he said, ‘This is Wickedness!’ And he threw her down into the middle of the ephah and cast the lead weight on its opening.” So, it is not a spaceship but a symbolic representation of wickedness (the woman) that has been weighed (as in “weighed and found wanting”) via the ephah and lead weight (a standard of measure). FYI: an ephah is “a dry measure of quantity…the receptacle for measuring or holding that amount.”
But wait, there’s more:
Then I lifted up my eyes and looked, and there two women were coming out with the wind in their wings; and they had wings like the wings of a stork, and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heavens.
I said to the angel who was speaking with me, “Where are they taking the ephah?” Then he said to me, “To build a temple for her in the land of Shinar; and when it is prepared, she will be set there on her own pedestal.”
In short, this entire episode appears to be some form of vision wherein an actual situation is represented symbolically with a flying indictment representing swift judgment, a woman representing wickedness, an ephah and lead representing being weighed, women being those who carry out the judgment, stock wings representing the swift execution of judgment, that they are taking the ephah and woman to build a temple in Shinar for some future event as it will be her own pedestal.
But why would wickedness be given a temple wherein she sits on a pedestal? It appears to be in preparation for the future ultimate rebellion; Armageddon.
Women have long been connected to the occult and this is likely because when the sons of God married the daughters of men (angles and humans who produced hybrids; see my section on Nephilim) they did not have TV so they actually talked—shocking! Well, angels revealed heavenly occult teachings to them (occult literally meaning secret, hidden, etc.). Yet, this is one woman in particular and while she may be symbolic the symbol may be more real than we imagine. Note that Revelation 17:3-5 notes that John:
saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast, full of blasphemous names, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a gold cup full of abominations and of the unclean things of her immorality, and upon her forehead a name was written, a mystery, “Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots and of the Abominations of the Earth.”
Noah had a wicked son named Ham had a wicked son named Cush who had a son named Nimrod. Nimrod is said to have been a gibbowr gibbowr which is various translated as that he “became a mighty one” (chalal hayah gibbowr gibbowr). Succinctly stated, Nimrod became the head of the first attempt at a one world order (which the New World Order seeks to emulate); one language, one civilization, one religion and one monument-tower to bind them all as they sought to reach the heavens. Genesis 10:10 notes, “The beginning of his kingdom was Babel and Erech and Accad and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.” So, we have his kingdom beginning at Babel after which the Tower of Babel was named and after which Babylon came to be named. His one world order kingdom began in the land of (geographical location) Shinar. As for the tower, Genesis 11:4 notes that the people said:
Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.
They sought to build a centralized world headquarters, a city, and a tower. Some have noted that since their built this tower in a plain or level valley (biq’ah) they did not think to literally construct a tower tall enough to reach heaven (whoever tall that would have had to have been) but that via the tower they sought to make a name for themselves (some sort of commemorative monument relating information), they sought such unity so that they would not be “scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth,” however, they were and yet, their monument remained—at least for some time.
Moreover, or however, note that the term “will reach” as in the tower into heaven is not in the Hebrew and so the text actually states that they built it so that its top/head heavens (ro’sh shamayim). They may mean that it was built to the heavens as in a styled temple/structure/monument in reverence, in worship of, the heavens (planets, Zodiac, etc.).
All this to detail that the woman seems to be being set upon the stage of the final events, the last days, the end times.
EZEKIEL’S VISION WHEELS
The vision pertaining to wheels within wheels, etc. and how this was a primitive depiction of an ancient alien / ancient astronaut UFO.
There is much to consider so let us review the bulk of the relevant text of Ezekiel chapter 1 to begin with. Note that Ezekiel saw vision(s) (mar’ah) whilst “among the exiles” in Babylon, “the land of the Chaldeans,” which will become a very important detail:
…As I looked, behold, a storm wind was coming from the north, a great cloud with fire flashing forth continually and a bright light around it, and in its midst something like glowing metal in the midst of the fire. Within it there were figures resembling four living beings.
And this was their appearance: they had human form. Each of them had four faces and four wings. Their legs were straight and their feet were like a calf’s hoof, and they gleamed like burnished bronze. Under their wings on their four sides were human hands. As for the faces and wings of the four of them, their wings touched one another; their faces did not turn when they moved, each went straight forward. As for the form of their faces, each had the face of a man; all four had the face of a lion on the right and the face of a bull on the left, and all four had the face of an eagle. Such were their faces.
Their wings were spread out above; each had two touching another being, and two covering their bodies. And each went straight forward; wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go, without turning as they went. In the midst of the living beings there was something that looked like burning coals of fire, like torches darting back and forth among the living beings. The fire was bright, and lightning was flashing from the fire. And the living beings ran to and fro like bolts of lightning.
Now as I looked at the living beings, behold, there was one wheel on the earth beside the living beings, for each of the four of them. The appearance of the wheels and their workmanship was like sparkling beryl, and all four of them had the same form, their appearance and workmanship being as if one wheel were within another. Whenever they moved, they moved in any of their four directions without turning as they moved.
As for their rims they were lofty and awesome, and the rims of all four of them were full of eyes round about. Whenever the living beings moved, the wheels moved with them. And whenever the living beings rose from the earth, the wheels rose also. Wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go in that direction. And the wheels rose close beside them; for the spirit of the living beings was in the wheels. Whenever those went, these went; and whenever those stood still, these stood still. And whenever those rose from the earth, the wheels rose close beside them; for the spirit of the living beings was in the wheels.
Now over the heads of the living beings there was something like an expanse, like the awesome gleam of crystal, spread out over their heads. Under the expanse their wings were stretched out straight, one toward the other; each one also had two wings covering its body on the one side and on the other. I also heard the sound of their wings like the sound of abundant waters as they went, like the voice of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army camp; whenever they stood still, they dropped their wings. And there came a voice from above the expanse that was over their heads; whenever they stood still, they dropped their wings.
Now above the expanse that was over their heads there was something resembling a throne, like lapis lazuli in appearance; and on that which resembled a throne, high up, was a figure with the appearance of a man. Then I noticed from the appearance of His loins and upward something like glowing metal that looked like fire all around within it, and from the appearance of His loins and downward I saw something like fire; and there was a radiance around Him. As the appearance of the rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the surrounding radiance. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face and heard a voice speaking.
If that was not enough, consider Ezekiel 10:8-22 this time:
…The cherubim appeared to have the form of a man’s hand under their wings. Then I looked, and behold, four wheels beside the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub; and the appearance of the wheels was like the gleam of a Tarshish stone. As for their appearance, all four of them had the same likeness, as if one wheel were within another wheel. When they moved, they went in any of their four directions without turning as they went; but they followed in the direction which they faced, without turning as they went.
Their whole body, their backs, their hands, their wings and the wheels were full of eyes all around, the wheels belonging to all four of them. The wheels were called in my hearing, the whirling wheels. And each one had four faces. The first face was the face of a cherub, the second face was the face of a man, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.
Then the cherubim rose up. They are the living beings that I saw by the river Chebar. Now when the cherubim moved, the wheels would go beside them; also when the cherubim lifted up their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels would not turn from beside them. When the cherubim stood still, the wheels would stand still; and when they rose up, the wheels would rise with them, for the spirit of the living beings was in them.
Then the glory of the Lord departed from the threshold of the temple and stood over the cherubim. When the cherubim departed, they lifted their wings and rose up from the earth in my sight with the wheels beside them; and they stood still at the entrance of the east gate of the Lord’s house, and the glory of the God of Israel hovered over them. These are the living beings that I saw beneath the God of Israel by the river Chebar; so I knew that they were cherubim. Each one had four faces and each one four wings, and beneath their wings was the form of human hands. As for the likeness of their faces, they were the same faces whose appearance I had seen by the river Chebar. Each one went straight ahead.
Firstly, note something very telling: the cherubim as very stiff and it is very interesting that he saw “figures resembling four living beings.” It may be nothing but perhaps this is tantamount of that which we also know of as figures that resemble living beings: statues, mannequins, etc. (and now even computer animation—recall that this was a vision). So perhaps they were not actually living things but looked like living things; although later, in this vision, they become animated and perform various tasks.
As an example of the stiffness, here are some relevant portions of the texts above:
Their legs were straight…their wings touched one another; their faces did not turn when they moved, each went straight forward…Their wings…touching another being…each went straight forward…without turning as they went…Whenever they moved, they moved in any of their four directions without turning as they moved [the cherubim and the wheels]…Whenever the living beings moved, the wheels moved with them…Wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go in that direction…When they moved, they went in any of their four directions without turning as they went; but they followed in the direction which they faced, without turning as they went…Each one went straight ahead.
By definition, by its very nature and character the vision is animated. Thus, we see that whatever these various things are—the beings, the wheels, the seat, the structure itself, etc.—they are being animated (made to perform tasks, move about, burn, shine, etc.).
The bottom line is that beyond all of the details into which one can focus is that Ezekiel, in exile in Babylon, is being shown, in an animated vision, a Babylonian throne upon which is not Marduk but YHVH. YHVH is expressing to His people, via His prophet Ezekiel, that even then, even in Babylon, He is ultimately in charge, He is enthroned, He is upon the throne; He is the King of kings and Lord of lords.
This is evident from what is known as ancient near east (ANE) throne iconography which you can see in the attached slideshow. Via the various illustrations of ancient, historically contextual, thrones; you can see how the stiffness of the cherubim denoted the nature of a throne as it is made of wood, stone, metal, etc.
