The Rape of Skepticism, part 1

Pardon the inflammatory title but I find myself, quite often, asking “Where have all the skeptics gone?”

Granted, if you are an atheist and or otherwise label yourself as skeptic (as I do) and you are reading this blog, this essay, you are well ahead of the game. The game is the trend of various to label themselves skeptics while not displaying any characteristics of skepticism.

I find myself literally begging certain personages to exercise their self-professed skepticism. These pseudo-skeptics seem to think that skepticism means über opposition or absolute contrarianism—this denotes opposition for the sake of opposition and contrarianism for the sake of contrarianism. This pseudo-skepticism does not engage in the information which is provided to respond to some objection, does not learn anything and certainly does not augment its position. The pseudo-skeptic simply marches on continuing to commit the very fallacies and making the very misstatements which have been specifically dispelled in relation to their objection in the first place.

Certainly, there is enough of such continuance of fallacy after it has been corrected to go around and apply to all sides of the arguments. Yet, since the tu quoque grants the argument in the first place we will continue on to example pseudo-skepticism.

What I wished to address is the issue of rape in the Bible, my specific responses to rape in the Bible, the pseudo-skeptical insistence of reading rape into biblical texts where there is no rape, the continued insistence by pseudo-skeptics that rape is there (it must be because that is what they were told to read into it), their refusal to accept reasoned, contextual, textual criticism, etc., etc.,, etc.

I will review comments made about the issue at Free Republic and the Memphis Freethought Alliance – Google group. In both cases I have basically posted the text of my EvilBible.com page along with the relevant hyperlinks (which, by the way, have been added to since) and we went from there. I continue to foolishly assume that people who favorably reference, cite, quote, allude to or otherwise advertize evilbible.com will be interested in considering some counter arguments, some counter evidence, some logical, theological, contextual or otherwise eisegesis related information but alas—I find that rather than considering the vast amounts of information upon which they could feast their skeptical hunger they prefer to merely ask questions which could all be answered if they actually took the bothersome time and effort of actually reading the information which I already provide to them.

The most relevant essay related to this issue is the parsed one entitled Atheism, the Bible, Rape and EvilBible.com.
