And some wonder why “eco” and “green” have bad names in some circles. Well, EcoMall posted an interview with Gopi Krishna, by Tom Kay, in their Green Shopping section.
In short, he is calling for world leaders to partake in an occult initiation (and, as we shall see, occult is his term) whereby they will become possessed by the serpent power known as Kundalini. What this has to do with Green Shopping is certainly mysterious. However, what it has to do with the eco movement (aka environmental movement, Gaia (Earth) worship, neo-Paganism, etc.) will become apparent.
As is popular amongst New Agers he attempts to buttress his Eastern mystical views with science.
Gopi Krishna stated:
most of us use only ten percent of the brain…90 percent of the brain is unutilized…nature has provided it for certain purposes which are not yet known to science.
According to Indian tradition, there is a region in the brain below the crown and about the pallette which is called Brahmarendra or the cavity of Brahman. This region can be activated by certain disciplines and when activated it can give to the individual the same vision of the universe which all great mystics of the Earth have described.
When it is awakened the normal energy of the body or the blood is not able to fuel the center. It needs a more powerful and constrained psychic fuel. This fuel comes from the reproductive system, which is transformed into a kind of radiation and that radiation awakens and makes the center function.
Note the point about neo-Paganism as it is “nature” which has “provided it for certain purposes…”
The referenced region in the brain is aka the seat of the soul and allowing mystical forces access to it amounts to noting more than demonic possession (with a happy-Eastern mysticism-face on it or not, it is what it is by any other name).
The psychic fuel that comes from the reproductive system is Kundalini which is said to be a serpent energy coiled three and one half times around the base of our spines.
Before moving further note that neurologist Barry Gordon (Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore) has noted that “the ‘10 percent myth’ is so wrong it is almost laughable.”
Some trace the myth to philosopher and psychologist William James (1842-1910 AD) since he wrote the following in his work The Energies of Men, “We are making use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources.” James sought personal mystical experience via partaking in chloral hydrate, amyl nitrite, nitrous oxide and peyote.
Barry Gordon further notes that the myth has survived due to our considering our shortcomings to be lack of brain power, as it were. We only powder down to 10% while at rest and not doing much of anything:
“It turns out though, that we use virtually every part of the brain, and that [most of] the brain is active almost all the time,” Gordon adds. “Let’s put it this way: the brain represents three percent of the body’s weight and uses 20 percent of the body’s energy.”
Neurologist John Henley (Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn) further notes that “Evidence would show over a day you use 100 percent of the brain.”
In fact, he ads that:
There are people who have injured their brains or had parts of it removed who still live fairly normal lives, but that is because the brain has a way of compensating and making sure that what’s left takes over the activity.
Back to Gopi Krishna now as he goes on to relate his own Kundalini experience:
I had been meditating for 17 years…while I was sitting cross-legged in a state of meditation…Something exploded in my brain and a current of silvery light rising from my spine radiated throughout my whole brain, and I felt myself expanding in all directions…something was changing in me and I could perceive this change for many, many years, day and night. In fact, I passed through grave crises during that period…
Some of the results of this neural-mystical explosion are:
I am never tired of sitting in quiet and reflecting on myself…one feels himself to be a king, he feels himself to be the master of what he sees.
He further claims to have reached:
a new kingdom, I should say, is opened. This is probably what Christ meant when he said, “The Kingdom of Heaven is within you.” This is the Nirvana of Buddha; and this is the state of Vada mentioned by the Suffi mystics.
The qualifying term “probably” is telling as it is certainly not what Christ meant when he said, “The Kingdom of Heaven is within you.” The Kingdom of heaven/God has various meanings in the New Testament, for example:
seek first the kingdom of God (Mat 6:33)
the kingdom of God has come upon you (Mat 12:28)
the kingdom of God will be taken from you (Mat 21:43)
the kingdom of God is at hand (Mar 1:15)
The kingdom of God has come near to you (Luke 10:9)
the kingdom of God has come upon you (Luk 11:20)
when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God (Luk 13:28)
They will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and sit down in the kingdom of God (Luk 13:29)
Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation (Luk 17:20)
the kingdom of God is within you (Luk 17:21)
Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it (Luk 18:17)
they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately (Luk 19:11)
for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God… for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes (Luk 22:16-18)
Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power (Mar 9:1)
But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the kingdom of God (Luk 9:27)
These are merely examples of the manner which we all know that language functions: words, terms and phrases derive their meaning from their context. And what the context, concepts and contents of the Bible denote is never that a serpent power will cause neuro-mystical experiences that will result in never tiring of reflecting on ourselves and being masters of what we see. Also, there is no relation between Jesus’ teachings and the Nirvana of Buddha or the Vada of Suffi mystics.
He emphasizes that “Kundalini is the power, the mechanism” for individual and worldwide change:
what we do is awaken to activity a certain region in the brain. This means that nature has already provided a potential in the brain which has to be awakened. This means that the brain can still organically evolve to a higher performance. This is my experience, that the human brain is still organically evolving in the direction of the great mystics, in the same direction as the great geniuses. For this evolution a certain type of life is necessary.
For instance, throughout our life this evolution is relentlessly going on and we have to cooperate with it. When we do not cooperate with the inner evolution we create problems for ourselves. For that purpose, for the last 5,000 years at least great prophets have been born.
Beginning with the Vedas, then Buddha, then Christ, then Mohammed, then Guru Nanak, and all the ancient prophets of the Bible, they have been born time after time, and they have given some ‘teaching to mankind’, which was a direction for how to live while the brain is still evolving.
Their Sermon on the Mount, the Ten Commandments, the Discourses of Buddha, The Bhagavad-Gita, and all those directions contained in the religious scriptures of the Earth — they are all meant to regulate our life so that we may live in harmony with the law of evolution which governs our life…work in harmony with the law of evolution that is at work day and night within their brains…
Note again that is it nature that has “provided a potential…” and he couples nature with evolution but evolution of a sort that one can tap into in order to access its functionality of increasing our brain power (the 10% myth again).
So his prescription for being in harmony with the law of evolution is to follow the teachings of the great prophets have been born. Of course, the problem is that the Vedas, Buddha, Christ, Mohammed, Guru Nanak, et al. taught very different things. He attempts to water down, so as to mix, the Sermon on the Mount, the Ten Commandments, the Discourses of Buddha, The Bhagavad-Gita, etc. and yet, they only mix as do oil and water; you shake them up and they appear to mix but just let the concoction sit for a moment and you will see that the cohesion was mere elusion—this is not mystical but mythical.
The issue is not simply being nice to each other and getting along; this is certainly and obviously beneficial. The deeper issue is the deeper issue which is correct worldviews/theologies and the eternal ramifications thereof. Here is an example of his attempted elucidation of the mixture noted above:
The life to be lived is just as you see in the sermon on the Mountain – a life of humility, a life of love, a life of purity, a life in which you wish for others what you wish for yourself, a life in which you are pure, you are not sophisticated, you are not overly clever, you are not smart, you do not use your cleverness or smartness to take what belongs to others, a life of extreme purity and a life of simplicity, that you do not waste the resources of the Earth.
As you know, every animal satisfies his basic needs from the recycled resources of the Earth. Man is the only creature who is wasting the basic resources — the minerals — for his own luxury and pleasure. That is what the Sermon on the Mount is meant to teach, that humanity should live simply, beautiful, pure, compassionate lives. That is the type of life necessary for the awakening of Kundalini.
The Sermon on the Mount had nothing to do with the awakening of Kundalini/serpent energy but about how to conduct oneself under the auspices of a true and living personal God-YHVH.
He is asked whether there is any “change in consciousness in birth or in death” and replies:
We see the sun rising in the morning and setting in the evening. Actually, is there any change in the sun? The same is true of consciousness. Consciousness is eternal: our souls. They are eternal, immutable, omissive, omni-present, omnipotent, and our spark partakes of the same nature as the divine, so there can be no death for this, no change for this. The change occurs in our shells, mind, intellect, the senses.
But, of course, the Sun is constantly changing as it fluctuates, flares up and will eventually die. From his metaphor (and we ought to grant that a metaphor is just that, metaphorical and that all metaphors eventually break down) he concludes that “Consciousness is eternal: our souls” possess characteristics which, actually, pretian to true and living personal God-YHVH alone. We are immortal but He is eternal.
We now come to how he plans to implement this into a New Kundalini World Order:
What we can do is to make a thorough research of all the religious scriptures of mankind, of all the occult traditions of the past, and to make experiments on the brain. In fact, yoga was devised in India to make experiments on the brain. The very word “yoga” means to yoke, to join the individual soul with the over-soul…
I think any sane government, any good government, should first make research on the brain, on the nervous system. The ancient religious traditions, the ancient occult traditions…
Gopi Krishna notes:
I wanted to confirm that my experience was real experience, and not a delusion and that it is corroborated by ancient tradition. I made a study of those traditions, and I found that my experience is in conformity to the ancient traditions…this and this alone is the answer to modern crises.
This is interesting in that he sought to confirm his experience was real by seeing if it had ancient precedence. Well, there is no doubt that his experience was (1) real and has (2) ancient precedence but so what? He uncovered that demonic possession is ancient—that’s all.
Tom Kay notes, “You said that nature is very merciful, and that nature will use the least amount of force to put us back on the proper path.” Note the neo-Pagan focus.
To this Gopi Krishna replies that indeed, “nature is merciful and kind…nature forgives us.” It is rather odd that someone who believes in the “law of evolution” refers to nature as being “merciful” as nature is red in tooth and claw. For evolution to progress it is not only necessary for the fit to live but for the unfit to die. Evolution is built upon billions of death creatures.
He further notes that “Heaven is always merciful” but just what is “Heaven”? A metaphysical dimension, the ether, the sky, YHVH’s realm, what?
Now, here comes the bottom line:
The leaders of the world have to be convinced and for that convincing the experiment is necessary…We have to show that the brain is evolving…
And when he says to experiment he means just that; initiating human beings into his occult cult and observing them, “For the experiment a hundred people will be needed…to mold their lives in consort with the spiritual laws”:
in every generation there will be some people who have reached the higher dimensions. They will be the rulers, political leaders, scientists, and educators. They will guide the race to rise higher and higher and higher…
At this time we do not [have a spiritual leader of that magnitude] but they will come. They will be born when experiments are made…
Ultimately, his goal is to accomplish “awakening this power” so as to “lead humanity to this new dimension of consciousness.”
Tom Kay asks, “Are the biological bases of manic depression, schizophrenia, and genius all manifestations of the same thing?” And Krishna replies that “if you do not live a disciplined life, then the awakening of this center can be unhealthy.” Indeed, there are many, many (many) stories of people involving themselves in the Kundalini cult and ending up insane (if they are lucky…and I do not even believe in luck).
He notes that “some who think they are in touch with God” are actually experiencing “a distorted vision of the same power.”
In short, the leaders of the world are primed to accept such New Age, Secret Society, Mystery Religion, Occult—by any other name—practices as many of them are already ensconced in such groups.
Let us end with a note from a Gopi Krishna sympathizer; the self-confessed possessed professor Jeffrey Kripal notes (Mutants and Mystics: Science Fiction, Superhero Comics, and the Paranormal, pp. 170-13—see my review of the book here) a correlation between Grant Morrison, who is another self-confessed possessed individual (see video here) and who writes his occult worldview into comic books and Gopi Krishna:
…Morrison’s portrayal of the beautiful Phoenix in his famous New X-Men run (2001-4). Phoenix is an omnipotent supergoddess who possesses the human body of Jean Grey in order to do things like blip out the entire universe for a second or effortlessly bend space and time to her whim. In terms of cosmic scope and pure power, Phoenix has few, if any, peers.
Now consider how writer Morrison explains to his readers how Phoenix takes over Jean’s body: “the Phoenix consciousness accesses its human host via the so-called Crown Chakra port at the top of the skull”…In other words, the Phoenix consciousness manifests in Jean’s body through Tantric yoga.
Hence as we move toward the end of the second millennium and beyond, more and more superheroes begin to speak and act like Hindu or Buddhist mystics, and numerous figures (far too many to list here) are portrayed in the lotus posture of yoga.
Figures like Kirby’s Eternals, Sharkosh the Shaman in Conan the Barbarian…Wolverine, Phoenix. Doctor Manhattan, Aleister Crowley in Promethea, and Magneto all take on this classic meditating pose, often with waves of metaphysical energy, plasma, or fire emanating from their subtle superbodies.
A concrete historical example, again from the influential1960s, may help here.
Consider Gopi Krishna’s classic Kundalini: The Evolutionary Energy in Man (1967). A humble Kashmiri civil servant, Krishna was meditating on Christmas Day of 1937 when he found himself overwhelmed with a fantastic energy stream erupting through his spinal column and out the top of his head in a classic experience of the kundalini.
What makes Krishna so interesting and so relevant for our purposes here are the very explicit ways he understood these occult energies as the secret force of evolution itself…For Krishna, at least, the kundalini was “the evolutionary energy in man” or the secret “mechanism of evolution…Indeed, he described it as a “superintelligent energy” or “living electricity” that intends to transform our very flesh until we become veritable gods on earth…
Krishna was very clear, moreover, that these occult energies, at once divine and dangerous, are the deepest metaphysical catalyst of both sexual desire and spiritual transcendence, that is, he insisted on a deep link between sex and spirit. Hence his teachings that the reproductive system is “reversible,” and that its spinal streams or energy can be transformed into a kind of “radiation”—yes, he actually uses the word [Kripal notes this due to the contextual correlation with his book wherein radiation refers to that which changes someone in some spiritual manner], and often-that activates the cosmic portal in the brain core.
He also taught that celibacy, although necessary at a certain stage of practice, is a real mistake as a general rule, since it deprives the next generation of the transmission of the biological, cellular, even atomic transformations that the occult energies effect in the body-mind of the empowered mystic. In our own present terms, although he can be understood in all three, Gopi Krishna was in the Next Age X-Men mutant camp, not the Superman celibacy ideal or the Silver Age sublimation school.
Krishna also insisted that these evolutionary energies are “the biological basis” of genius, and that they can produce a whole host of supernormal capacities. These are the siddhis or “superpowers” of Indian yogic lore. How does the kundalini grant such things?
By opening up the spinal channel and physically transforming the bodybrain in order to make it a more translucent “filter” of the ocean of consciousness and energy that constitutes our true supernature. The manifestation of the Phoenix consciousness, we might say [this is in reference to an X-Men comic book character].
This Ocean of Mind, Krishna explains, is “a boundless world of knowledge, embracing the present, past, and future, commanding all the sciences, philosophies, and arts ever known or that will be known in the ages to come…a formless, measureless ocean of wisdom from which, drop by drop, knowledge has filtered and will continue to filter into the human brain.”
I cannot help but recall here Ray Palmer’s experience of a “universal record or storehouse of meaning” and his conviction that “somewhere, somehow, the total sum of all knowledge exists.” Recall also that it was a broken back, that is, an accidentally opened spinal column that initiated Palmer into a world of paranormal powers, psychical experiences, and flying saucers. As with Gopi Krishna’s evolutionary energy. Cosmic Mind could filter in now.
