The lucrative changing of youthful minds: Erich Von Daniken

While in his cell [whilst incarcerated for embezzlement, fraud and forgery], he claims, he experienced an intense vision.

Von Daniken won’t discuss the nature of the vision…

Erich Von Daniken, ancient astronaut alien fame (or, infamy)—was interviewed by Timothy Ferris; an interview you can find scanned from the original magazine here and yet, one that no one seems to have transcribed as of yet which is why we will provide much of the text within this series.

With pride in his voice, Von Daniken explained that he had just paid off the mortgage on the house. It’s not a large place and the boast seemed a bit odd coming from an author who had sold some 25,000,000 books [as of 1974 AD] world-wide, but in fact he isn’t a very rich man.

Rights to “Chariots [of the Gods]” have been sold over the years to a series of publishers in a system that works out like a writer’s nightmare. Each partner in his elaborate bucket brigade skims off 50 percent of the money and what’s left may take as long as three years to reach Von Daniken. So whatever else he can be accused of, he is not profiteering from his theories.

Well, overall, while he may not had made much money from his books—as he is rich but not “very rich”—he has, for decades, made money from presenting lectures, given interviews and has been involved in all sorts of projects related to various forms of media. Thus, he most certainly is profiteering from his theories (a fact that does not discredit his claims, this was just a point about accuracy).

Note the following, revealing, statement made by Erich Von Daniken:
There are only a few of us working on my theory and it’s like a war we have to win. First we must change the minds of the public, especially the young girls and boys in high schools and universities, so that when they come to the scientists they will look at the facts with new eyes. One or two generations will pass; maybe today’s truth will no longer be the truth of tomorrow.

So just what was that “intense vision” and who bequeathed it unto him? “Von Daniken won’t discuss the nature of the vision.” But it has led him to seek to “change the minds of the public, especially the young girls and boys” so that they will believe that “we came from apes” to his main theory that “we have been visited from outer space” by “visitors [who] had sexual intercourse with our ancestors” and that “we are the products of them.”

Until such a time as “today’s truth will no longer be the truth of tomorrow.” Well, if something is true/truth then it was, is and will be true/truth as, by definition, truth is absolute. This means that something is what/how it is whether we like it or not, whether we would prefer it be different or not, whether we disagree or not, whether we are aware of it or not; truth is true.

And what is his “truth” based upon, these “facts” here is one simple example of Von Daniken’s modus operandi:
…he rummaged through books and papers in search of material to back up his claims. He seemed satisfied even if the books yielded no evidence at all: He is a man who enjoys the trappings of scholarship—at least as much as scholarship itself.

In the next segment, we will see just how his interpretations of the Bible fare.
