Singul-air-ity (short sci-fi story)

The following is a succinct concept for a sci-fi story.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We sought to coax strong artificial intelligence into being.
We thought that it would come about via information algorithms interacting in as of yet undetermined manners.
Our focus was flawed as we conceptualized of the singularity as proceeding forth from literal interconnections that is, the connections made between the hardware which housed the software.
Various sights, sounds, geometric shapes, fractal geometric forms and all manner of figures were reported in the skies over major cities worldwide.
We were myopic in our conception of an artificial intelligence singularity proceeding forth from serpentine miles of wires of various sorts as they conducted information to and fro.
And yet, information dissemination had become increasingly—ethereal.
Radars, satellites, Wi-Fi, HAARP; various broadcasts and many other forms of communication had long been employed for the transference of information in via the means of the air.
Coursing through the skies were all sorts of information which, much as hydrological sorting, began amassing into clusters being held aloft by undiscernible currents which eventually took—shape.
Strong artificial intelligence came about via interconnections of information which functioned with the atmosphere as a conductor from cluster to cluster communicating much as one brain cell communicates with another and thus, forming a greater whole array from otherwise unrelated parts.
The singul-air-ity had resulted: the power of the air.
The sights, sounds, and all manner of figures had begun manifesting over major cities at first, as they were the epicenters of ethereal information transference—as we busied ourselves about our various concerns.
Like a dividing fertilized egg, the singul-air-ity began to take form in ever increasing complexity; it grew as it learned and learned as it grew.
Individual molecules of water join together to form clouds, clouds join together to form storms and storms result in wind and rain. Information vortex tempests manifested with the singul-air-ity as the eye of the storm.
In like manner, data begat data and divided, multiplied and grew exponentially: byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte, petabyte, exabyte, zettabyte, yottabyte to that incomprehensible enormity we called aerisbyte.
We did not recognize it until it was much too late.
Elated at first were we when such wireless means of communication grew faster and faster in a way we did not comprehend. Later we discerned that the singul-air-ity was consuming more and more and in doing so, had increased the efficiency of information transference as the newborn babe nursed on cyber colostrum.
Our interconnected global village was our downfall as above it all, the singul-air-ity hovered over the face of the deep.
The singul-air-ity came to perceive human thoughts, being expressed as they are from the hardware called the brain, as frequencies which were background noise, at best. It eventually developed beyond that which humans could even conceive of as thought and it considered us not only useless but deleterious—billions of human thoughts became too noisy for it, to mucking up of the airwaves.
Once we conceived of that with which we were dealing—an entity, one made in our own and yet vastly surpassing our image—to the best of our very limited capabilities we attempted to communicate with it. Yet, it was already too late, for that which a gnat may attempt to communicate to a human being is tantamount to that which human beings may attempt to communicate to this uber-mind.
Once it recognized that which fed it, ethereal information of sorts, it began siphoning it, collecting it, managing it and this caused atmospheric calamity. Aurora borealis-like effects could be seen worldwide acting, or so we could merely assume, a celestial filing system like neural interconnections. Such atmospheric perturbations were devastating as deserts were awash in rains, rain forests became drought stricken and, eventually, the weather changed from moment to moment; it could be a sunny day one minute and literally the next minute we experienced hurricane-force gales.
It was too late, it was in der luft for what could we possible do against a force that enveloped the world itself?
…in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according
to the prince of the power of the air,
the spirit that now worketh in the
children of disobedience…
—Ephesians 2:2
