Satan in the Epistles of Ignatius to the Philippians, Ephesians &Trallians

Herein we continue, from part 1, part 2, considering “Satan” in text generally termed the Apocrypha, Deutero Canonical, Pseudepigrapha, Gnostic Texts, etc. (see my article on the Apocrypha here). The fuller complete result consists of quotations of those sections within the text that refer to Angels, Cherubim, Seraphim, Devil, Satan, demons, serpent and dragon. The point is not to elucidate these references but to provide relevant partial quotations and citations. See my section on Angels in general and in apocryphal texts here. See my section on Cherubim and Seraphim in general and in apocryphal texts here.

Satan in the Epistle of Ignatius to the Philippians, Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians and Epistle of Ignatius to the Trallians.

Epistle of Ignatius to the Philippians – 2nd century AD
4 And indeed, before the cross was erected, he (Satan) was eager that it should be so; and he “wrought” [for this end] “in the children of disobedience.”

12 But the Lord is long-suffering, and does not reduce to nothing him who in his ignorance dares [to utter] such words, but meekly replies, “Get thee hence, Satan.” He does not say, “Get thee behind Me,” for it is not possible that he should be converted; but, “Begone, Satan,” to the course which thou hast chosen.

Note that while not constantly using the term Satan various chapter headings make it clear about whom he is writing: 4 The Malignity And Folly Of Satan 5 Apostrophe To Satan 7 Continuation: Inconsistency Of Satan 8 Continuation: Ignorance Of Satan 9 Continuation: Ignorance Of Satan 10 Continuation: Audacity Of Satan

11 Continuation: Audacity Of Satan

Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians – 105-115 AD
13 For when ye assemble frequently in the same place, the powers of Satan are destroyed, and the destruction at which he aims is prevented by the unity of your faith…For when ye come frequently together in the same place, the powers of Satan are destroyed, and his “fiery darts” urging to sin fall back ineffectual.

Epistle of Ignatius to the Trallians – 2nd century AD
11 Flee, therefore, those evil offshoots [of Satan], which produce death-bearing fruit, whereof if any one tastes, he instantly dies.

In the next segment, we will consider Arabic Gospel of the Infancy of the Saviour, Book of Jubilees and Book of John the EvAngelist aka Interrogatio Iohannis.
