Satan in Secret Gospel of Mark, Tertullian, Polycarp, Barnabas, Nicodemus & Pseudo-Matthew

Herein we continue, from part 1, considering “Satan” in text generally termed the Apocrypha, Deutero Canonical, Pseudepigrapha, Gnostic Texts, etc. (see my article on the Apocrypha here). The fuller complete result consists of quotations of those sections within the text that refer to Angels, Cherubim, Seraphim, Devil, Satan, demons, serpent and dragon. The point is not to elucidate these references but to provide relevant partial quotations and citations. See my section on Angels in general and in apocryphal texts here. See my section on Cherubim and Seraphim in general and in apocryphal texts here.

Satan in Secret Gospel of Mark, Spectacles by Tertullian, Epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians, Epistle of Barnabas, Gospel of Nicodemus or Acts of Pilate, Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew aka Gospel of the Birth of Mary.

Secret Gospel of Mark – 70-255 AD
For, priding themselves in knowledge, as they say, “of the deep things of Satan”, they do not know that they are casting themselves away into “the nether world of the darkness” of falsity, and boasting that they are free, they have become slaves of servile desires.

Spectacles by Tertullian – 197-220 AD
8 Moreover, there is no place–whether streets or marketplace or baths or taverns or even our own homes–that is completely free of idols: Satan and his Angels have filled the whole world.

Epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians – 110-140 AD
7 …whosoever perverts the oracles of the Lord to his own lusts, and says that there is neither a resurrection nor a judgment, he is the first-born of Satan.

Epistle of Barnabas – 80-120 AD
II Since, therefore, the days are evil, and Satan possesses the power of this world, we ought to give heed to ourselves, and diligently inquire into the ordinances of the Lord.

XVIII For over one are stationed the light-bringing Angels of God, but over the other the Angels of Satan. And He indeed (i.e., God) is Lord for ever and ever, but he (i.e., Satan) is prince of the time of iniquity.

Gospel of Nicodemus, or Acts of Pilate – 4th century AD
IV (XX) And while all the saints were rejoicing, behold Satan the prince and chief of…Satan the prince…Satan the prince of Tartarus…Satan the prince of death.

V (XXI) And as Satan the prince, and Hell, spoke this together, suddenly there came a voice as of thunder and a spiritual cry: Remove, O princes, your gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors, and the King of glory shall come in. When Hell heard that he said unto Satan the prince: Depart from me and go out of mine abode: if thou be a mighty man of war, fight thou against the King of glory. But what hast thou to do with him? And Hell cast Satan forth out of his dwelling.

VI (XXII) Peradventure thou art that Jesus, of whom Satan our prince said that by thy death of the cross thou shouldest receive the dominion of the whole world. Then did the King of glory in his majesty trample upon death, and laid hold on Satan the prince and delivered him unto the power of Hell, and drew Adam to him unto his own brightness.

VII (XXIII) Then Hell, receiving Satan the prince, with sore reproach said unto him: O prince of perdition and chief of destruction, Beelzebub, the scorn of the Angels and spitting of the righteous why wouldest thou do this?…O prince Satan, father of all the wicked and ungodly and renegades wherefore wouldest thou do this?…O prince Satan, holder of the keys of hell…O prince Satan, author of death and head of all pride…And when Hell had spoken thus unto Satan the prince, then said the King of glory unto Hell: Satan the prince shall be in thy power unto all ages in the stead of Adam and his children, even those that are my righteous ones.

Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew aka Gospel of the Birth of Mary – 600 to 625 AD
26 Then said Jesus to him: Woe unto thee, thou son of death, thou son of Satan!

28 And when Jesus saw this, He said to that boy who had destroyed His dams: O most wicked seed of iniquity! O son of death! O workshop of Satan!

In the next segment, we will consider Epistle of Ignatius to the Philippians, Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians and Epistle of Ignatius to the Trallians.
