Reviewing Chris Bell answering, “Were There Really Giants Before Noah’s Flood? | What Does the Bible Say About the Nephilim?”

@RealBibleStudyOrg YouTube channel posted a vid titled Were There Really Giants Before Noah’s Flood? | What Does the Bible Say About the Nephilim?. I was made aware of it by its creator since we’d been discussing issues ranging from that to Nephilim. We first got in touch when I informed him that I had posted Chris Bell claims “The Nephilim were the ‘bad’ descendants of Adam & Eve before Noah’s flood” and I then posted Review of Chris Bell’s, “Did Adam & Eve’s Children Marry Each Other? | What Genesis Actually Says.”

The vid begins by him asking if there were really, “enormous giants” on Earth—whatever that means since enormous and giants are both vague, generic, subjective, and multi-usage.

Thus far, it’s about that some versions of Gen 6:4 refer to Nephilim which some render (don’t translate) as giants.

To save me some transcribing time, I screenshot what he displayed in the vid:

This exhibits his MO in that he seeks to interpret an ancient Hebrew term bene ha Elohim by jumping forward millennia in time and into a different cultural, historical, and literary context, into another language in order to then go back in time and apply it—I noted an example of this in the article on Adam and Eve’s children.

I also noted that his MO includes asking gotcha questions which supposedly have no answers and so he seeks to fill the gaps with his own assertions—some which are misguided and anachronistic. It goes something like this, “Where does the Bible say _____________” filling in the blank with any given point, “since it doesn’t then it can’t be the case.”

Thus, the vid’s info section asks and answers, “Were the Nephilim really enormous giants – the supernatural children of fallen angels? Genesis never says that.”

Indeed, but it doesn’t have to spoon feed us since we’re expected to rightly divide God’s Word and consider the immediate and greater context.

He notes, “It never says the Nephilim were enormous” indeed, the dirty little secret is that since we’ve no reliable physical description of Nephilim then their height is a non-issue and that alone debunks 99% of un-biblical Nephilology—the modern branch of which is just un-biblical neo-theo sci-fi tall-tales.

He notes what the image shows, Adam was called a son of God millennia later. He adds, “So, sons of God does not automatically mean Angels.” Indeed, in any language any given word or phrase can be used to refer to various things. Yet, that sons of God does not automatically mean Angels doesn’t mean sons of God does not mean Angels in this case.

Job 38:7 (which is historically, culturally, and literarily much closer than Luke), as one example, shows us that, “sons of God” can refer to non-human beings (which some LXX editions have as “Angeloi”: plural of “Angelos”) since they, at the very least, witnessed the creation of the Earth.

Jude and 2 Peter 2 combined refer to a sin of Angels, place that sin to pre-flood days and correlate it to sexual sin which occurred after the Angels, “left their first estate,” after which they were incarcerated, and there’s only a one-time fall of Angels in the Bible. So, if they’re not referring to the Gen 6 affair, we’ve no idea to what sin they’re referring.

Ironically, he claims that not all people descended from Adam and Eve but that the Nephilim did.

He rightly notes, “the frightened spies’ report in Numbers, and the so-called Book of Enoch” are that upon which what I’ll term pop-post-flood-giants-Nephilology is based and that’s un-biblical tall-tales sold to Christians.

1 Enoch is Bible contradicting folklore from centuries, if not millennia, after the Torah, see my book In Consideration of the Book(s) of Enoch.

Anyone appealing to Num 13:33 needs to mention that they’re relying on:

1.       One single unreliable sentence

2.       From strictly non-LXX versions (since that version’s version of that verse doesn’t even mention Anakim)

3.       Of an unreliable “evil report”

4.       By 10 unreliable guys

5.       Whom God rebuked—to death

6.       Who made five mere assertions unbacked by even one single other verse in the whole Bible

7.       Who contradicted Moses, Cable, Joshua, God, and the rest of the whole entire Bible

8.       Then post-flood Nephilologists have to invent un-biblical fantasy tall-tales about how Nephilim got past the flood, past God.

I could go on but see my post Chapter sample: On the Post Flood Nephilim Proposal—which I’m currently updating.

There’s also this:

Indeed, Genesis never says that Angels mating with women produced, “supernatural…enormous giants” nor is there any reliable indication of any such thing anywhere except for folklore, historical fiction, etc., from millennia after the Torah.

Yet, it does lead us to believe that Angels mated with women given relevant data and that the original, traditional, and majority view among the earliest Jewish and Christian commentators, starting in BC days, was the Angel view as I proved in my book On the Genesis 6 Affair’s Sons of God: Angels or Not?: A Survey of Early Jewish and Christian Commentaries Including Notes on Giants and the Nephilim.
