Von Daniken won’t discuss the nature of the vision…
In 1974 AD Erich Von Daniken—of ancient astronaut alien fame (or, infamy)—was interviewed by Timothy Ferris; an interview you can find scanned from the original magazine here and yet, one that no one seems to have transcribed as of yet which is why we will provide much of the text within this series.
Timothy Ferris did a great job in digging into the issues pertaining to Erich Von Daniken many claims. Von Daniken shows an ability to attempt good answers which, if left to themselves, would fly (pardon the pun) and yet, which Ferris all but dismantles by digging deeper.
Let us begin with some statements about Erich Von Daniken background beginning with what his views are:
Von Daniken speculates that Earth was explored at least twice in prehistoric times by intelligent beings from another world. According to him, the mated with humans, bestowed the gifts of intelligence and civilization and may have helped build such monuments as the pyramids…
Now, quoting Von Daniken:
we have been visited from outer space in ancient times but that those visitors had sexual intercourse with our ancestors…and altered, by artificial mutations, our intelligence…we are the products of them.
This does not deny Darwin and his theory: I fully admit that we came from apes. My question is just why and how we became intelligent. To this question each mythology, each old religion gives the same answer: The gods created man after their own image.
Von Daniken is asked, “When did you become convinced that these theories were true?” and replies:
I guess only in recent years. I wrote Chariots of the Gods? in 1966 so for me it’s an old book. When I wrote it, I was not at all convinced. By the second book, Gods from Outer Space I was more certain, but not absolutely. The basic thing is to be convinced that the fundamental theory is wright, that we have been visited from outer space and those visitors altered our intelligence by artificial mutations. Of this I have felt certain for the past four years or so.
What is interesting about the whole ancient astronaut alien issue is that it is yet another corruption or, a materialist rewriting of, the Bile’s Genesis chapter six, et al.
This is Genesis 6:1-5 from the NASB:
Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose.
Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Note that “that Earth was explored at least twice in prehistoric times by intelligent beings from another world” mirrors Genesis six’s Sons of God who came to Earth. These are alien beings, not from another planet but from another dimension: EDs and not ETs.
That they “mated with humans, bestowed the gifts of intelligence and civilization and may have helped build such monuments as the pyramids” also mirrors the Genesis text as the extra dimensional aliens married and mated with the daughters of men and their children (the Nephilim) became mighty (Hebrew gibbowr) men of old renown. In post flood history we find that Nimrod was mighty/gibbowr and set out to build the tower of Babel and various cities.
The main premise obviously differs, such as that “we came from apes,” (see what we meant by materialism: Atheism, by any other name) and yet the story line lines up at certain points.
The reason is that the real events of creation, Eden and its garden, an original couple or humans, the Sons of God mating with the daughters of men, the flood, the ark, etc. survive as stories in every ancient culture is that these are our most ancient histories.
These would have been carried across the Earth by the people groups who separated according to language groups after the tower of Babel event. Henceforth, this history would be subject to variation, changes in names, etc., and yet maintain the basic premises and come to be called legend or myth.
