Petri Paavola on the Giants of the Bible, part 3 of 4

Under consideration is the article Giants of the Bible by Petri Paavola (note that I am quoting the English version of the article which contains very slightly broken English in places)—find all segments of this review here.

GIANTS IN THE BIBLE
Petri Paavola then has a subsection titled, “Appearances of the giants in the Bible.”

2 Samuel 21 refers to “.Ishbibenob, who was of the sons of the giant (rapha), the weight of whose spear was three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with new armour, thought to have slain David. But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him…Sibbecai the Hushathite slew Saph, who was of the sons of the giant (rapha)…a champion, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant (rapha).” Note that this has led many to assert that giants, in general, had 24 digits but the Bible only states that this one person did. The text also refers to “Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim the Beth-lehemite slew Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.”

At this point, Paavola notes, “In this passage is copying error, because David killed Goliath. Some have assumed that the verse should be: Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite” and I too dealt with this issue, see A Lie About Goliath?

The text also notes, “These four were born to the giant (rapha) in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants” with the “giant (rapha)” being Goliath. genesis206-7814873

Paavola then backtracks to 1 Samuel 17 which refers to “a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named
Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span” and we are told, “Goliath’s height was about eleven feet” however, I am not aware of anyone else who claims as much. In fact, Goliath is taller in Greek than he is in Hebrew due to a disparity between Hebrew and Greek manuscripts regarding his height so that he ranged from 6.7 ft. to 9.8 ft.

Paavola emphasizes that Goliath’s “coat of mail weighted one hundred and fifty six pounds. His spear’s head weighted about eighteen pounds” assuming that Paavola’s undisclosed calculations are accurate. His point is that “These measurements reveal to us that how large sized the giants were in the days of the King David.”
I will add the various references to “the staff of” spears being “like a weaver’s beam.” However, note that 1 Chronicles 11 points out that “an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high [7.5 ft.]; and in the Egyptian’s hand was a spear like a weaver’s beam” and that good ol’ regular guy Benaiah the son of Jehoiada “went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and slew him with his own spear” so that he had not trouble handling it.

Deuteronomy 2 refers to “The Emim…a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim; these also are accounted Rephaim (rephaim), as the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim…a land of Rephaim (rephaim)…but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim.”

And we end up circling back to two issue which are that these are “giants” which tells us nothing of specific heights and that “The giant nations were descendants of evil spirits (the fallen angels), who were full of satanic evil.

Deuteronomy 3 tells us that “only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the Rephaim (rephaim); behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbah of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.” Paavola comments, 9 x four cubits is about 14.8 x 8.2 ft. Yet, “the cubit of a man” most likely refers to 18 inches making it 13.5 x 6 ft. In any case, we are told nothing about Og’s height but only the size of his bed.

2 Peter 2 notes what I aforementioned about fallen Angels being incarcerated, “God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell [actually, Tartarus], and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment.” Petri Paavola rightly notes that “God threw down to the hell the angels who sinned. Those angels are in chains waiting the great judgement day” but then what of his claim that fallen Angels continued their mating with women post-flood?
He may assume that the pre-flood Angels were incarcerated and then other Angels fell, did likewise and were also incarcerated, then more, etc. Indeed, he writes, “part of fallen angels are still free and deceiving people on the earth and part of them are imprisonment in chains.” He also specifies, “Part of the fallen angels (who didn’t practice sexual intercourse with the daughters of men) are still free and part of them (who practiced sexual intercourse with the daughters of men) are imprisoned.” Yet, the Bible does not even hint at any such thing: he is basing this on some basic errors along the way.

He notes that the imprisoned Angels “left their own habitation (spirit body)” yet, “spirit body” is a contradiction in terms as a body has flesh and bones but a spirit does not (FYI: a spiritual body is another issue). I would think that “left their own habitation” refers to heaven which they left when they fell therefrom.

Jude mirrors Peter in stating, “the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.” This time Paavola comments, “fallen angels left their celestial bodies, and took the shape of the human body” which is something about which Jude says nothing and is also not even hinted at in the entire Bible.
