On the evolution of marriage: “Man + Brother's Widow (Levirate Marriage)”

We continue, from part 1 and part 2, considering a ubiquitously promulgated common misconception based pop-cultural talking point of a myth is that there has been an evolution of marriage so that one cannot claim that marriage between one man and one woman is traditional, normal, family value based, right, true, God given, etc.

The graphic’s next assertion reads:

Man + Brother’s Widow (Levirate Marriage) Genesis 38 6:10

– widow who had not borne a son required to marry her brother in law

– must submit sexually to her new husband

One feels like stating, “Yeah, and?” You see, the premise is to prove that marriage has changed, evolved. Thus far, the first text (considered in part 2) was about one man and one woman and this second text is about one man and one woman so where is the evolutionary change?

Well, this is about one woman and more than one man but only one woman and one man at a time.

Man + Brother’s Widow (Levirate Marriage) Genesis 38:6-10

Indeed, the concept of a Levirate Marriage is simply stated in Deuteronomy 25:5-10 wherein we learn that it had to do with establishing proper familial successions (and provision for the widow). Thus, it was considered shameful if the male refused the Levirate Marriage as the man would be called before the elders of his city and shamed before the community.

The text of Genesis 38:6-10 cited in the graphic’s text does not establish the Levirate Marriage but is simply an example of one (in which the male failed to perform his duty).

– widow who had not borne a son required to marry her brother in law

Indeed.

– must submit sexually to her new husband

Why “must”? Perhaps because it makes it sound bad (or immoral but based upon what moral premise? They do not say). Yes, married couples engage in sexual relation.

Next, we will consider “Man + Wives = Concubines.”
