We continue, from part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5 and part 6, considering a ubiquitously promulgated common misconception based pop-cultural talking point of a myth is that there has been an evolution of marriage so that one cannot claim that marriage between one man and one woman is traditional, normal, family value based, right, true, God given, etc.
The graphic’s next assertion reads:
Male Soldier + Prisoner of War – Number 31:1-18, Deuteronomy 21:11-14
– under Moses’ command, Israelites killed every Midianite man, woman and child; save for the virgin girls who are taken as spoils of war
– wives must submit sexually to their new owners
This denotes more condemnation without providing a moral premise upon which to base the condemnation. Moreover, note that just a the previous statement (covered in part 6) this is irrelevant to the alleged premise of the graphic and its text as it pertains to a one man with one woman marriage.
This is certainly emotive stuff but what is the point of the Biblical texts?
Assuming that war ensued, once it is over they were to:
…remain outside the camp seven days; whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves and your captives on the third day and on the seventh day. Purify every garment, everything made of leather, everything woven of goats’ hair, and everything made of wood (Numbers 31:19-20).
This ensures the health of soldier and war captives.
In the case of the women mentioned in the texts noted above, if a man was interested in one of them he was to:
Provide her with housing.
Allow her one month to mourn.
Then they may get married.
And if they later divorce, she was to go free and not be mistreated (see Deuteronomy 21:10-14).
This was about, cleansing after a war, the provision of a home, time to mourn, marriage and if decided upon (no such ridiculous things as “owner”), freedom and protection from mistreatment.
Next, we will consider “Man + Woman + Woman + Woman…(Polygamy).”
