On Megatron & Metatron & Supernatural & Star Wars & Voltron

I like watching the TV show “Supernatural” to keep up with the latest pop-occulture and pop-theology. For example, they have referred to Prometheus, the Greek mythological lucifer figure, as the savior of humanity.

I have written on its background in the article Theology at the Movies and on Television, part 2 of 2

In the May 8, 2013 AD episode they erroneously claimed that demons are human souls who became warped by being in hell—and that thus, demons can be saved.

On the other hand, they rightly defined Nephilim as being the hybrid offspring of “angels” and humans (see Genesis 6:4-6, 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 6-7).

Ironically, it is likely that demons are not fallen “angels” but rather, the disembodied souls of dead Nephilim who seek embodiment again.

I say “angels” in quotations as this is common parlance. However, not just angels fell as, for one notable example, heylel (aka luficer) fell and he is not an angel but a cherub—a different category of being.

The May 15, 2013 AD episode of the TV show Supernatural ends with angels falling out of heaven much as did satan of whom Jesus said, “I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven” (Luke 10:18).

However, in the show the angels (who, un-biblically, are spirits who possess human bodies—thus, the show’s definition of angels is the Biblical definition of demons) fell not due to being case out by God but due to being cast out by Metatron God’s scribe.

The show is premised upon a deist-like theology whereby God established his administration made up of angels, etc. and then went away somewhere. Only a handful of angels ever even saw God and the rest of them believe in God by faith.

Metatron decides to shut heaven down or shut it off from all others and thus, casts the angels to Earth. Also, since angels have never even seen God one of them asks Metatron what He is like and the reply is that God is somewhat sexist…but fair (by the way, see Find it Fast – Fast Facts: is the Bible misogynistic? To undo this bit of poppycock).

STAR WARS

George Lucas incorporated the name Anakim into the Star Wars stories as Anakin. In the Bible the Anakim

(“im” being Hebrew plural for a masculine word—“ot” is plural for feminine words) are the sons of Anak who were a tribe of giants.

A common misconception about Star Wars is that it is a story about futuristic space battles, etc. That is merely the form that the story takes. So, what is the story? It is about witchcraft (by any other name) as the story’s premise is that there is an impersonal Force (thus, an impersonal “god”) into which one may tap and which one can utilize for “good” or “evil.”

I quote “good” and “evil” because as the Force is impersonal and therefore, amoral it is mere a tool. A hammer can be used to strike a nail or a person’s head; it is merely a tool. The Force itself is not good or evil and being impersonal does not command, demand or even recommend anything at all; it is amoral (lacking morality).

In fact, within the Star Wars stories the “good guys,” the Jedi, claim that they are good and that the “bad guys,” the Sith are evil. Well, the Sith claim just the opposite and this is exactly the problem with dualism; it is utterly subjective (see video here for elucidation on this point).

Darth Vader is a Sith, who is actually referred to as a sorcerer. His birth name is “Anakin Skywalker” (in the original script it was “Anakin Starkiller”). The Sith Dark Lord tells Vader that his son, Luke Skywalker, must not become a Jedi and Vader promises to turn Luke to the dark side.

The word Anakin ends with an “n” and not an “m” as is the Hebrew masculine plural “im.” This means that it was either slightly changed for whatever reason or was actually taken from Aramaic wherein the plural ending is “in.”

METATRON

Metatron is:

…an archangel in Judaism. According to Jewish medieval apocrypha, he is Enoch, ancestor of Noah, transformed into an angel. There are no references to Metatron as an angel in the Jewish Tanakh or Christian scriptures (New and Old Testament); however, Genesis 5:24 is often cited as evidence of Enoch’s bodily ascension into heaven —”And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.”

Although he is mentioned in a few brief passages in the Talmud, Metatron appears primarily in medieval Jewish mystical texts and other post-scriptural esoteric and occult sources, such as the Books of Enoch—1 Enoch, 2 Enoch, and 3 Enoch. In Rabbinic tradition, he is the highest of the angels and serves as the celestial scribe.

That he is “the celestial scribe” is why he was chosen to play that role within the TV show Supernatural.

MEGATRON

We, again, appear to be encountering a slight change in spelling, from Metatron to Megatron, with the following cartoon and live action movie character:

Megatron is a fictional character from the Transformers franchise, created by Hasbro, and based on a toy design by Takara. He is a sentient robotic lifeform from the planet Cybertron. He is also the Supreme leader of the villainous faction (primarily the Decepticons) and primary antagonist in most works of Transformers fiction.

He has the ability to transform between his robot shape and various weapons or vehicles, depending on which “universe” he is seen in. Within the fiction, he is often said to have named himself after the legendary Megatronus Prime, and similarly inspired the name of a later villainous character.

Here is more background on the Transformers plot:

…centers on factions of transforming alien robots (often the Autobots and the Decepticons) in an endless struggle for dominance or eventual peace…

This is merely a form of the angel vs. demon story, as per the plot of the 2007 AD movie:

An ancient struggle between two extraterrestrial clans, the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons, comes to Earth…

A long time ago, far away on the planet of Cybertron, a war is being waged between the noble Autobots (led by the wise Optimus Prime) and the devious Decepticons (commanded by the dreaded Megatron) for control over the Allspark, a mystical talisman that would grant unlimited power to whoever possesses it.

The Autobots managed to smuggle the Allspark off the planet, but Megatron blasts off in search of it. He eventually tracks it to the planet of Earth (circa 1850), but his reckless desire for power sends him right into the Arctic Ocean, and the sheer cold forces him into a paralyzed state. His body is later found by Captain Archibald Witwicky, but before going into a comatose state Megatron uses the last of his energy to engrave into the Captain’s glasses a map showing the location of the Allspark, and to send a transmission to Cybertron. Megatron is then carried away aboard the Captain’s ship…

the Pentagon to send their special Sector Seven agents to capture all “specimens of this alien race”…Meanwhile, deep inside Hoover Dam, the cryogenically stored body of Megatron awakens.

Moreover:

…the AllSpark, a cube-shaped artifact capable of granting independent life to normal electronic and mechanical objects, which is the source of life for all Transformers, both Autobots and the evil Decepticons.

Their society flourished until they were betrayed by Megatron; and war erupted over the AllSpark, which was lost and ended up on an unknown planet, Earth.

It is readily discernible why the Transformers franchise is so popular as it has it all: the ages old struggle between “good” and “evil” (there is that impersonal and amoral dualism again as the AllSpark is the source of life for all Transformers), alien spirits (as in reality, the Transformers are some sort of disembodied spirits which “possess” mechanical objects such as cars, tanks, etc.), ancient technology which came to Earth (ancient astronaut theory? Perhaps a future movie will have human life having come about due to the action of the AllSpark upon a primitive Earth), secret government black ops, etc., etc., etc.

Many more examples of this sort of thing could be stated. Here is a quick one: Pluto was the ruler of the underworld in classical mythology (earlier named Hades) and then became the cute little Disney doggie.

These are all examples of ancient heroes and villains coming right into pop-occulture and pop-theology often in line blurring manners that neglect the classical, and biblical, distinctions between actual good and actual evil.
