Occult rumors in West Memphis: Damien Echols WM3

In the article Book review: “ABOMINATION – Devil Worship and Deception in the West Memphis Three Murders” by William Ramsey we noted that the West Memphis Three (WM3) pertained to three brutally murdered eight year olds—Steve Branch, Christopher Byers and James Michael Moore—and three accused, incarcerated and subsequently released teenagers (released after circa two decades)—Damien Wayne Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr.

WEST MEMPHIS IN THE EARLY 1990s AD
Noting some succinct statements on the matter, it is clear that residents, law enforcement officials, the media and involved personages themselves oft reported occult activities occurring in and around the West Memphis Arkansas area.

Guy Reel, Marc Perrusquia, and Bartholomew Sullivan retell reports of:

“strange men with painted faces sat in a circle and recited incantations in what the boys took to be Spanish [likely Latin]. They smoked funny-smelling cigarettes and did “nasty” things with their bodies.”
(Blood of Innocents: The True Story of Multiple Murder in West Memphis, Arkansas, p. 27)

The local newspaper, the Commercial Appeal ran a relevant story on June 13, 1993 AD wherein it was noted that “Experts warned Crittenden County officials last year about a rising interest in the occult among young people” including “a self-styled satanic cult” along with “reports of animal sacrifice and satanic ritual….detailed artwork used in satanic rituals” and other “ritualistic activities.”
“‘Stonehenge,’ a decaying local cotton gin decorated with satanic graffiti and strewn with animal carcasses…One of the accused teens told police” of various “cultic rituals…included eating dogs and participating in sex orgies.” This is not merely about teens getting it on but about sex magkic which is an integral part of many magickal systems from those of Hinduistic backgrounds to satanism to white magic.

Moreover, “a few sites in Crittenden County that appeared to be ritual meeting places, including the Dabbs School. One room in the school included a pentagram surrounded by upside-down crosses and other symbols.”
The article specifies that “Several acquaintances say Echols customarily wore black and told them he killed cats and worshiped the devil…People who knew Echols said he dressed in black, called himself ‘Damien,’ and carried a cat’s skull and at times a spell book with him.”

After the murders:

“near the taped-off crime scene. Police officers near the crowd heard whispers of devil worship in Robin Hood Hills…bizarre rituals in the woods, with strange people frequently entering and leaving the undeveloped area.”
(William Ramsey, Abomination: Devil Worship and Deception in the West Memphis Three Murders, p. 24)

In the next segment we will consider magic versus magick.
