If it walks like a duck, looks like a duck then, it’s a duck…but who’s the quack in this case?
The cable TV show Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson has caused a firestorm by voicing an opinion and has been fired from the show. It is fascinating that within a society, a pop-occulture, which has foregone the Judeo-Christian principles upon which it was founded people still insist on holding each other morally accountable. But what morals? The morals agreed upon by the majority, the media and culture at large.
Thus, at the current moment the morality de jour is thou shall not speak disapprovingly of homosexuality and thou shall only besmirch Christianity.
Phil Robertson may not have made a polished erudite elucidation of the matter but stated things in his own terms. A fragment of a GQ Magazine interview reads:
“You put in your article that the Robertson family really believes strongly that if the human race loved each other and they loved God, we would just be better off. We ought to just be repentant, turn to God, and let’s get on with it, and everything will turn around…
Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men…
It seems like, to me, a vagina – as a man – would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical…
adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers – they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right…
We never, ever judge someone on who’s going to heaven, hell. That’s the Almighty’s job. We just love ’em, give ’em the good news about Jesus – whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ’em out later, you see what I’m saying?”
Many of us who consider homosexuality to be a sin just like any sexual sin would certainly have chosen other words. However, the fact is that these are his words. It is interesting how within a society which largely no longer thinks but mostly reacts emotionally one must make statement whilst standing atop egg shells.
The manner whereby our culture functions today is that traditional, biblical Christians are viewed as cultists and un-traditional, un-biblical Christians are viewed as mainstream. Yet, mainstream within culture does not amount to mainstream theologically.
Enter GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (and by the way: LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual), the spokes personage of which, Wilson Cruz, has come to the rescue and elucidating who is and who is not a “true” Christian:
“Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil’s lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe. He clearly knows nothing about gay people or the majority of Louisianans – and Americans – who support legal recognition for loving and committed gay and lesbian couples. Phil’s decision to push vile and extreme stereotypes is a stain on A&E and his sponsors who now need to reexamine their ties to someone with such public disdain for LGBT people and families.”
Note the generic nature of the emotive statement:
They “claim to be Christian” but what, are not? Please provide the evidence.
Well, the evidence is that he does not accept homosexuality.
“Phil’s lies about an entire community” but which lies are those?
Homosexual males do chose another man’s body parts over those of females. This is the choice which makes them homosexual.
But perhaps the lies pertain to “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.” This statement does not imply that homosexuals will become indulgers in bestiality, etc. but denotes the slippery slope of society’s acceptance, and endorsement, of one traditionally immoral action and then another and another.
But what about our reference to a homosexual choosing to be that way. Well, consider the example of homosexuality, on the one hand, and bestiality, on the other. Besides being cross-species sexuality (a line that many people cross, see the video 666 the # of the beast(iality)) the difference is that in the case of homosexuality the participants have consented while in the case of bestiality we simply cannot know whether the animal did so or not.
There is a difference between impulse and action; one may be born with a homosexual impulse but they make a choice to carry that impulse into an action. Consider that we are all naturally born bedwetters; the fact that we were born that way does not make that behavior, that action, acceptable into adulthood.
Indeed, homosexuals consent to engage in same sex with a member of the same gender. And what is consent? It is agreement. And what is agreement? It is the acknowledgment of having made a choice. Thus, homosexuality is a choice. Those who disagree are violating this logic and also must answer to what they will think of those who claim to be naturally born homophobes. In fact, the actor Woody Harrelson’s father is a convicted murdered who claimed to be a “natural born killer” (which is whence came the movie title).
Now, GLAAD’s Wilson Cruz makes a huge error which, by the way, is made by just about every single supporter of same sex marriage. He refers to “the majority of…Americans – who support” homosexual relationships. Did you discern the problem? He bases his statement upon “majority” opinion. The issue is that since he cannot appeal to the ethos, YHVH’s law and will, he only has majority view. The issue is that a few years ago it was not the majority view, today it is (at least that is the pop-media talking point) but what will it be tomorrow?
You see, when he bases the acceptability of homosexuality upon majority view, he risks having to admit that homosexuality is not acceptable just as soon as society changes its mind.
Also, note a very important point as Cruz referred to “loving and committed gay and lesbian couples.” The fact is that there is a vast difference between “loving and committed gay and lesbian couples,” on the one hand, and the homosexual movement, on the other. To same gendered people who love each other is one thing; but the movement which not only seeks to come out of the closet, but seeks to kick in your front door, is another.
It is a result of the movement that personages such as Wilson Cruz take it upon themselves to promulgate who is and who is not a “true” Christian. You see, to such people, homosexuality becomes a worldview and they judge all things according to it. Which political party to support, which theology is correct, who is intolerant, who is a “true” Christian; they answer all of these questions, and more, in accordance to homosexuality. If they accept homosexuality they it is moral, tolerant, right, good, true and if not it is immoral, intolerant, wrong, evil, false.
This is the incredible power of the homosexual movement; that it has homosexuals and their straight supporters taking on the homosexual worldview and judging all things by it.
