The 1959 AD movie “The Tingler” was directed by William Castle was screen-written by Robb White and stars Vincent Price as Dr. Warren Chapin, Philip Coolidge as Oliver “Ollie” Higgins, Darryl Hickman as David Morris, et al.
It is fascinating how the audience is prepped to interact with a fictional movie as if it were real life because they may feel certain sensations induced by the movie.
Note how ones courage is being challenged
They are prepped to express reactions triggered by the movie and thus, to make a one-to-one connection between the fake world of the movie and their real lives.
Publicity stunt, pretending that the Tingler is a real creature
The movie was being used so as to guide them and control them by making the movie guide both their emotions and actions. This is a literal form of rudimentary mind control.
And, FYI, the movie is about a caterpillar-like creature that controls humans by attaching to their spinal cord when it senses their fear. The remedy is to have the person scream which results in the creature detaching.
It also features “The owner of a nearby cinema befriends the doctor. His deaf-mute wife suddenly receives all sorts of shocks, like the sight of a bathtub full of blood with a hand reaching out from it. Since she can’t scream, she dies, and Chapin gets his hands on her oversize Tingler” as the creature is called, “When it eventually escapes inside the movie theater, the film within the film, and then the film itself, stops for an announcement from [Vincent] Price, out of character, urging the audience to scream their heads off.” This way, the movie is made to emulate real life all the more as it continues to play upon the audience’s real life experience of being frightened in a theater—wherein a Tingler may be crawling about!
