Celebrate diversity? Will Pilgrim High School in Warwick, RI censor traditional family values

In the hands of liberals in general and specifically the liberal in media, academia and pop-culture via the politically correct movement: diversity has become uniformity.

Diversity was once celebrated as tolerance of the fact that we were all different. Now, diversity has been redefined as we are all the same and any differences are to be censored. It may be a fine line, but it is a line nevertheless. Diversity was meant to show that we are all the same in the sense that we are all humans, have rights, hold beliefs, have emotions, etc. and we ought to all be respected. However, now the point is that we are all the same and this means that we all hold to the same views and alternatives are not tolerated.

In fact, tolerance used to mean putting up with that with which one disagreed but now it means only putting up with that with that which one already agrees. At least, it breaks down to liberal views are right and conservative ones are wrong.

This all proceeds forth from worldviews and not all worldviews were created equal. Consider the case of a student’s mural which was painted in Pilgrim High School in Warwick, RI.

The mural depicts a boy growing to adult manhood. At the end of the progression the boy became a man who is seen depicted as husband and father.

Pilgrim High School superintendent, Peter Horoschak, affirmed that painting was approved by school officials and so should be allowed to be completed as proposed.

But already, part of the pencil sketch draft upon the wall was pained over by a custodian because of the fracas that has ensued.

Wait, fracas about what? How could you miss it? The pre-approved mural ends with one man married to one woman with whom he has a child and a traditional family is unacceptable!!!

Complains are that it does not depict alternate lifestyles. Since the mural does not depict the chosen lifestyle of all student it must be challenged, censored and revised.

Consider some of the reporting on this issue.

Providence Journal:

…there was some concern that the traditional ending might offend some people with alternative lifestyles.

630 WPRO:

…concern was raised from the school and “asked her to look at other ways to show the outcome of the subject’s progression to adulthood.”

Turn To 10:

Some people at the school felt the mural didn’t accurately represent many students…

WPRI:

“Some members of the Pilgrim High School Community suggested that the depiction of a young man’s development… as displayed may not represent the life experiences of many students at Pilgrim High School,” Supt. Peter Horoschak said in a news release. [ellipses in original]

Note that Horoschak is referring to that which “Some members of…” stated but see how MSN manipulates the news by conveniently quoting a the portion of the statement so as to make it appear that this was Horoschak’s own view:

“The depiction of a young man’s development […] may not represent the life experiences of many of the students at Pilgrim High School,” school superintendent Peter Horoschack says. [ellipses in original]

Get the logical point? One may suppose that the mural could be revised to depict the boy turned may marrying another man, polygamouslly marrying many women, being celibate, having a sex change operation, being bisexual, being transsexual, being bicurious, etc., etc., etc., etc.

The point being this, no matter what the mural depicts it will, inevitably, “offend some people” and it will not “accurately represent many students.” If he is one man married to one woman then it offends those who are alternate. If he is depicted as living an alternate lifestyle it offends those who hold to traditional values—but who cares about them, right? And on it goes. Nothing will fit everyone and this is celebrative diversity.

Whatever happened to freedom of speech—or, freedom of artistic expression? In short, some parents, student and administrators at Pilgrim High School are attempting censorship, and squelching true tolerance and diversity.
