Causes and choice of homosexuality

We continue, from part 1, part 2 and part 3, considering an article by Jack Drescher, M.D., who is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, wherein he complied some interesting data with regards to, as he states it within his relevant paper’s title, “Queer Diagnoses: Parallels and Contrasts in the History of Homosexuality, Gender Variance, and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual” which was published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, April 2010 AD, Volume 39, Issue 2, pp 427-460. I will add bold and underlining emphasis for emphasis.

SPECULATIVE CAUSES OF HOMOSEXUALITY

…in the mid-19th century, [Karl Heinrich] Ulrichs (1994) hypothesized that some men were born with a woman’s spirit trapped in their bodies. He believed these men constituted a third sex and named them urnings…

Gender beliefs draw upon gender binaries that usually refer to a most ancient one, that of male/female, but can also include the 19th century binary of homosexuality/heterosexuality and, perhaps in the future, the emerging 21st century binary of transgender/cisgender.

Cisgender or cissexual refers to “related types of gender identity perceptions, where individuals’ experiences of their own gender agree with the sex they were assigned at birth.”

…mainstream psychiatry and medicine regarded gender incongruent individuals as confused homosexuals, neurotics, transvestites, schizophrenic or some combination thereof (e.g., Socarides, 1969). [Harry] Benjamin…“believed that the transsexual suffers from a biological disorder, that his brain was probably ‘feminized’ in utero. He eschews any psychological explanation” (Person, 2008, p. 272)…

Robert Stoller…believed that in some cases, childhood family dynamics were responsible for “causing” adult transsexualism…[he held] that GID in boys was a “developmental arrest…in which an excessively close and gratifying mother–infant symbiosis, undisturbed by father’s presence, prevents a boy from adequately separating himself from his mother’s female body and feminine behavior” (p. 25).

IS HOMOSEXUALITY A CHOICE?

APA supports and urges the repeal of all legislation making criminal offenses of sexual acts performed by consenting adults in private.…
In 1992, APA called on “all international health organizations, psychiatric organizations, and individual psychiatrists in other countries to urge the repeal in their own countries of legislation that penalizes homosexual acts by consenting adults in private.”

Three are a few things to note; firstly the issue of consent makes it clear that the homosexual act and living a homosexual lifestyle are choices. This is because consent is just that, a choice, an agreement. One may have impulses that they did not chose but one still choses to carry out actions.
Another issue is the concept of privacy as, particularly this year 2015 AD has shown, sexual acts performed by consenting adult homosexuals in private have led to a radical federal level redefinition of marriage for everyone. The same can be said for the social and financial results of sexual acts by consenting adults of any orientation in private when it comes to STDs, abortion, unwanted children, broken families, etc., etc., etc.

Next, we will consider, “Homosexuality – children, insurance and same sex marriage.”
