Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi musical arrangement for church

Black Sabbath is one of the founding bands of the heavy metal sound—and imagery, and lifestyle, etc.

Their very, very, very long time lead guitarist Tony Iommi has just released a musical arrangement he wrote for his UK hometown’s Birmingham Cathedral titled, “How Good It Is.” It features lyrics inspired by Psalm 133 which are sung by the Birmingham Cathedral Choir.

Very Reverend Catherine Ogle, Dean of Birmingham noted, “Tony and I were introduced by a mutual friend…we got to know one another better when I began to pray for him and kept in touch with Tony and his wife about his health.”

Wondering about the separation of church and well, Black Sabbath seems to have led Iommi to state, “People used to think we were Satanists but we weren’t. The songs were the opposite and all about the dangers of Black Magic and Satanism. The closest we came was Black Magic chocolates!”

Well, judging from their actual lyrics, imagery and background story, which you can hear in the video below, it may not be as clean cut and dry as that.

Here is Psalm 133:

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
