Behind the scenes of the new “Lucifer” TV show series

The FOX channel’s new TV show Lucifer is based not on the Bible but on comic books which are, in turn, loosely based not on John Milton’s Paradise Lost.

The comic character is named “Lucifer Morningstar” and appeared on DC Comics/Vertigo imprint’s The Sandman before being featured on the spin-off series Lucifer. Credit for the character is given to Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg.
FOX states that “the story of the original fallen angel.” This is a common misunderstanding of what Lucifer is as, in reality, he is a Cherub (see Ezekiel 28:14 – Cherubs and Angels are different categories of being much like humans and bovines are different categories of being even though both are Earth dwellers).

The TV show is based on the concept that Lucifer “has abandoned his throne” due to being “Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell” (which Biblically, he is most certainly not) after “roughly 10 billion years” and retired to Los Angeles (The Angels) to enjoy “wine, women and song.”
He own owns an upscale nightclub called Lux which is telling as the term Lucifer is a compound term from the Latin Lux (light) and feros (bearer or bringer).

Very insightful ad for the “Lucifer” TV show.

Considering that there is a cottage industry online which seeks to expose symbolism within the work of pop starts (and other genres) it is interesting that “a beautiful pop star is brutally murdered outside of Lux” and after circa “roughly 10 billion years” Lucifer “feels something awaken deep within him…Compassion? Sympathy? The very thought disturbs him.”

Lucifer’s left hand man is actually a demon disguised as a beautiful young woman named Mazikeen or simply Maze. The term derives from Jewish folklore according to which a Mazikeen is an invisible demon devoted to mischief of various levels.

Chloe Dancer is an LAPD homicide detective who gets involved in investigating the case. Chloe means green herb and, within Greek mythology refers to Demeter due to her correlation to agriculture.

Lucifer and Chloe end up teaming up to solve the murder and a mutual fascination ensues. She is interested in “drawing out people’s secrets and his desire to dispense justice, doling out punishment to those who deserve it.” He “is struck by Chloe’s inherent goodness…apparent purity and begins to wonder if there’s hope for his own soul yet.”

God sends an Angel named Amenadiel “to convince Lucifer to return to the underworld” but will “the Devil incarnate be tempted toward the side of Good, or will his original calling pull him back toward Evil?”

Thus, here is yet another cultural encouragement to view Satan as a cool, hip, nice guy.
