Atheism, Christianity and “The Office,” part 2 of 2

What have they done with Angela? Well, whilst being engaged to be married, she engaged in unmarried fornication with another man. Meanwhile, we are led to believe that she maintains a strictly plutonic relationship with her fiance only to find out that she was also engaging in unmarried fornication with him. Thus, she is engaging in unmarried fornication with two men.

Now, let us muse: why not identify the worldview/religion of the other characters whose character is just about as bad as that of the “Christian”? Why the exclusive belittlement? Why single her out as being the jerk and the top fornicator? We may never know but we may make a fairly educated guess: at least one of the show’s creators/producers/writers, Ricky Gervais, is an atheist (see here and here). So, is every atheist is automatically and purposefully anti-Christian? No, not automatically :o)

The point is more than just to point at the atheist and yell, “Conspiracy!” Also, please recall that just because one is paranoid does not mean that no one is after them. So what of it? Well, there indeed are atheists who admit to prompting media figures, behind the scenes, to openly besmirch “religion” and assert atheism via their various media outlets.

Thus, is The Office the puppet of the atheist puppet master? We may never know but as long as Sam Harris, et al, engage upon undercover media campaigns we are free to speculate, certainly free to discern and also free to point it out.

So what of Angela? When the third wheel finds out that she is engaging in unmarried fornication with her fiance he becomes incensed and breaks off his affair with her—’cause, you know, it is REALLY wrong when the cheater cheats on the cheater with whom she is cheating; you gotta have standards after all! Oi vey! Actually, she encourages both men to fight a duel for her hand in tainted marriage and they both end up dumping her.

Lesson to be learned; when you treat both yourself and others as mere bio-organisms who engage upon mere bio-functions of the sexual variety you will be treated just like that; something to be used and disposed of.

What is the lesson to be learned from that? What is the very real life lesson that our society is learning more and more? Out era is the era of ever increasing sexting; the concept of sending someone an utterly impersonal cell phone text message asking them to engage upon utterly un-emotionally attached fornication. Thereby, our increasingly faceless society—who communicate via written text via e-mail, texts, forums, comment sections, etc.—get the message, from a very early age—growing up with divorced parents who change the latest fornication partner as often as they change their socks—that one is not to build deep emotional relationships since even if one were to do so it would be doomed to be shattered by being used and discarded.

Consider the statement by a psychiatrist who retells the effects of her own teenage sexual escapades,

The longest-standing, deepest wound I gave myself was heartfelt; that sick, used feeling of having given a precious part of myself–my soul–to so many and for nothing, still aches. I never imagined I’d pay so dearly and for so long.

Indeed, we are increasingly seeing ourselves via materialistic/utilitarian/reductionist eyes; we are bio-organisms out to get what we want, using and discarding others at a whim and moving on to find the next empty promise of fulfillment.

The shows depict very real life characters who reflect society and who influence society while even amidst their shenanigan ridden attempts to find fulfillment are actually displaying an emptiness with which no black hole could compete—the emptiness and desperation of the human soul whose only fulfillment can ultimately be found in a deep, close and personal relationship with its creator—the Messiah Jesus.
