Angels and Demons in Aristides

Herein we will consider info on Angels and Demons in Aristides (2nd century AD). The fuller complete result consists of quotations of those sections within the text that refer to Angels, Cherubim, Seraphim, Devil, Satan, demons, serpent and dragon. The point is not to elucidate these references but to provide relevant partial quotations and citations. See my section on Angels here, Cherubim and Seraphim here, Satan here and Demons here.

From The Apology of Aristides.

Angels
2 Moreover the wind is obedient to God, and fire to the Angels; the waters also to the demons and the Earth to the sons of men.

14 Nevertheless they too erred from true knowledge. And in their imagination they conceive that it is God they serve; whereas by their mode of observance it is to the Angels and not to God that their service is rendered:— as when they celebrate sabbaths and the beginning of the months, and feasts of unleavened bread, and a great fast; and fasting and circumcision and the purification of meats, which things, however, they do not observe perfectly.

Demons
2 Moreover the wind is obedient to God, and fire to the Angels; the waters also to the demons and the Earth to the sons of men.

9 For it is impossible that a god should practise adultery or fornication or come near to lie with males, or kill his parents; and if it be otherwise, he is much worse than a destructive demon.

In the next segment, we will consider Angels in Arnobius of Sicca.
