A Facebook page called Ancientzen Libraryposted the following but didn’t seem interested in discussing it. I will reproduce his post, followed by my comment with which he didn’t interact.
The post reads thusly:
This is perhaps the most difficult question in the entire story of the Nephilim.
Numbers is brutally honest about what the spies saw: “We saw the giants there, the descendants of Anak who come from the Nephilim. We were like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and so we were in their eyes.”
Grasshoppers. This is not a description of men slightly taller than average. It is a description of beings on such a different scale that the Israelites felt like insects.
Shouldn’t the flood have solved the problem permanently?
There are two possible explanations, both disturbing in their own way.
The first: it happened again. If angels fell once, nothing in the biblical text prevents others from falling later. The pact of Mount Hermon involved 200 specific Watchers who were imprisoned. But the Bible speaks of legions of angels, thousands, tens of thousands. The failure of the first 200 doesn’t mean others wouldn’t try.
The second explanation is genetic. Noah was described as “perfect in his generations” — tamim in Hebrew, without blemish, without mixture. Some scholars argue this was not just moral but genetic: Noah’s lineage alone had not been contaminated. But the text says nothing about the same being true of his daughters-in-law.
What if one of them carried recessive Nephilim genes across the flood inside the ark itself?
I, True Freethinker, replied:
Friend, you’re unfamiliar with the relevant data.
“Numbers is brutally honest about what the spies saw” is a misrepresentation: that wasn’t “the” 12 “spies” you’re exclusively relying on one single unreliable sentence from one single unreliable evil report spoken by 10 unreliable guys whom God rebuked.
Why do post-flood-Nephilologists always begin by throwing God and His Word under the bus?
What makes you think that God failed, that He missed a loophole, that the flood was much of a waste, etc., etc., etc.?
Just how did Nephilim get past the flood, past God?
The dirty little secret is that since we’ve no reliable physical description of Nephilim then their height is a non-issue and that alone debunks 99% of un-biblical Nephilology—the modern branch of which is just un-biblical neo-theo sci-fi tall-tales.
Thus, what could perhaps be said to have made “the Israelites felt like insects” was a scare-tactic fear-mongering “Don’t go in the woods!!!” style of tall-tale.
As for “Shouldn’t the flood have solved the problem permanently?” indeed, and it did because God didn’t fail, didn’t miss a loophole, the flood wasn’t much of a waste, etc., etc., etc.
That, “There are two possible explanations” is a false dichotomy since the horn splitting third way is that Nephilim didn’t make it past the flood in any way, shape, or form but centuries post-flood 10 unreliable guys merely asserted they saw them.
“angels fell once” would mean God missed that loophole.
“The pact of Mount Hermon involved 200 specific Watchers” is from 1 Enoch which is Bible contradicting folklore from centuries, if not millennia, after the Torah, see my book “In Consideration of the Book(s) of Enoch.”
What does mean that “others wouldn’t try” is that there’s only a one-time fall/sin of Angels in the Bible.
That “the text says nothing about the same being true of his daughters-in-law” would mean God missed that loophole.
So “What if one of them carried recessive Nephilim genes across the flood inside the ark itself” well then, God failed, missed a loophole, the flood was much of a waste, etc., etc., etc. and that would contradict the Bible five times (Gen 7:7, 23; Heb 11:7; 1 Peter 3:20 & 2 Peter 2:5).
