A stereotypical atheist

Sometimes a stereotype is a stereotype for a reason. An atheist contacted me and turned out to be such a stereotype that it is virtually a caricature of a stereotype wrapped in a talking point.

The comment reads thusly:

Thanks for the link to the God Delusion! I love this book. It has helped me define my true atheist beliefs along with the millions of others now not afraid to speak out against the arrogance of religion. It’s so refreshing to see how atheism is becoming a majority in many parts of Europe and other parts of the world. I love it.

Thanks so much for the link… didn’t think I’d find it on a Jesus loving website, but the world is full of surprises.

Also, The one thing I’ve always found hilarious since my age of reason (roughly 5 or 6) is that religion is full of answers with no proof, yet Science is full of questions with tons of proof. Strange isn’t it?

gOD seems more fitting than God. 🙂 May jesus bless your heart, or Shiva, or Buddah.. or whatever cute fairy tale story you believe in.

The response is reproduced here with the addition of hyperlinks to various essays that elucidate relevant issues:

Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

It seems to me that with the addition of a little information, you could fine tune your various statements (the various positions to which you hold) and thus, come across as a bit more credibly.

I also love “The God Delusion” as it has strengthened my faith and reason. However, you love it for other reasons and for that, I am terribly saddened as it likely means that you lack of knowledge of the areas which he addresses surpasses Dawkins’.

I most certainly agree that with you about the “arrogance of religion.” I believe that “religion” is one of the greatest evils to ever proceed forth from the twisted mind of mankind. I am a follower of Jesus and not “religion.” On the other hand, the New Testament states, “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world” (James 1:27).

That you rejected God at the age of 5-6 appears to mean that you rejected a childish version of God which has likely remained immature and undeveloped. I would likely likewise reject a childish version of God.

It is rather odd that you appear to be placing “religion” into the category of providing “answers with no proof” and correlating atheism with “Science” which provides “tons of proof.” Strange indeed. Firstly, science and atheism have no relation whatsoever. Secondly, the methods of science were premised upon the belief that the universe was created by a rational God who created a rational creation and that we can thus, explore God’s creation. God created the material realm wherein material cause is followed by material effect. This is what makes science possible. Thirdly, what “proof” of or for atheism has science uncovered? Fourthly, ultimately, science does not deal in “proof” but in “evidence.”

If I may ask: of which denomination of atheism are you an adherent?

You appear to also lack knowledge of natural theology/general revelation considering that you correlate Jesus, Shiva, Buddah and “cute fairy tale story.” This is what I meant about supposing that your theology remained immature and undeveloped.

I pray that Jesus will soften your heart and reveal Himself to you and that He may richly bless you and yours.

The, sad, fact is that the comments made by the atheist certainly qualify as utterly stereotypical. The atheist hit virtually all of the well-within-the-box-atheist-group-think-talking-points-de jour. One may actually suspect that this is a put on by someone pretending to be an atheist.

Yet, it is stereotypical because this is the, uninformed, manner in which very many atheists function.

Lastly, why the atheist took the time to write the comment in order to express arrogance, condescension and in order to shove their beliefs down someone else’s throat remain mysterious.
