On the evolution of marriage: “Male Slave + Female Slave”

We conclude, from part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7 and part 8, considering a ubiquitously promulgated common misconception based pop-cultural talking point of a myth is that there has been an evolution of marriage so that one cannot claim that marriage between one man and one woman is traditional, normal, family value based, right, true, God given, etc.

The graphic’s next assertion reads:

Male Slave + Female Slave – Exodus 21:4

– slave owner could assign female slaves to his male slaves

– female slaves must submit sexually to their new husbands

Note that, yet again, whoever wrote this is implying immorality without providing a moral premise upon which to base their condemnation.

Also, note that this is supposed to be about the evolution of marriage but this one, yet again, is between one man and one woman. Moreover, note that they are attempting to push emotional button because the claim is that the “slave owner” arranges the marriage but that they “could assign female slaves” and that the “female slaves must submit sexually” with no mention of the very same with regards to the male.

Such manipulative subtleties are important to discern as they are the same sorts of tactics employed by the media, politicians, religious leaders, etc. For example, note that it begins with two “slaves”: “Male Slave + Female Slave” it continues to reference two “slaves”: “female slaves to his male slaves” but when it comes to submission and sex it suddenly switches from female “slaves” to male “husbands.”

Exodus 21 is a litigious portion of the Old Testament and thus, lays out various scenarios. As the first verse states, “Now these [are] the judgments which you shall set before them…”

There are laws pertaining to Hebrew servants and various details pertaining to how long they performed their services, whether they entered service single or married, got married whilst in service, etc.

This includes verse 5 refers to a servant wanting to stay and would “plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my sons. I do not want to go out free.” Clearly, we are not dealing with the Egyptian, Islamic or early North American slavery. The servant has a nice place for himself, his wife and his children and wants to keep his job.

This is nothing more than an arranged marriage, with which we dealt in part 2 of this series.

Overall, the graphic and text we have considered in this series leaves the fact that traditional family oriented YHVH ordained marriage has always been based upon YHVH’s intention, design of, example of, marriage which is one woman and one man. It points out times when this model was violated due to the inclusion of concubines and polygamy.

It condemns various Biblical practices without providing a moral premise from which to base the condemnations.

Ultimately, it leaves the Bible unscathed whilst utterly discrediting the modus operandi of whoever composed the graphic and text as they clearly engaged in unclear thinking, citations without quotations, much unjustifiable interpretation, engaging in manipulative tactics and simply missing the point.

So, has marriage evolved? No, marriage has devolved.
