Hollie McKay and Deidre Behar report Critics Slam ABC Pilot ‘Good Christian Bitches’ for ‘Inappropriate,’ ‘Damaging’ Title (Fox News, March 04, 2011):
An ABC pilot called “Good Christian Bitches” has religious and women’s groups up in arms over what they describe as an extremely offensive and distasteful show title… The plot centers on the life of reformed “mean girl” Amanda…who returns to her hometown of Dallas to find herself fodder for malicious gossip from the women in the Christian community…
the show’s title may change before it goes to broadcast, “Good Christian B******” is already causing uproar…the show…features the tagline “For Heaven’s sake, don’t let God get in the way of a good story!”
Just how is yet another malicious show with a malicious title a compliment?
Ok, try, try very hard, to imagine the following TV show premise and title:
Good Muslim B******
Or, how about:
Good Jewish B******
Or:
Good Liberal Democrat B******
Or, or, or, any of ten thousand premises and titles that no TV or Hollywood producer is iconoclastic or brave enough to touch.
Thus, this is one of many recent compliments of Christianity via attempted besmirchments as have been listed here. Such cowardly conformists of pop-cultural anti-Christian trends compliment Christians by admitting that they do not dare take their malicious shots at any other group, culture or religion expect for Christians.
They know that the worse they will get in return is people asking them to reconsider and prayer. See Unbelievers Compliment Christianity for more examples.
The report continues:
And Yana Walton from the Women’s Media Center said Christians aren’t the only ones who should be upset. “It is not an appropriate term to use to describe any woman, regardless of their faith,” Walton said. “Entertainment media, especially music and films, have been normalizing misogynistic language for years”… “ABC is doubling down on the offensive by also approving ‘Don’t Trust the B**** in Apartment 23,’ following up on the CBS show ‘$#*! My Dad Says.’ And this continued decline is unsurprising,” he [Dan Gainor, head of the Culture and Media Institute] said…
A representative for ABC declined to comment on the story.
Indeed, beyond the mere title, it is the very premise that is no less than malicious. Considering that most TV shows are about having as much unmarried sex with as many temporary sexual partners de jour, it is not surprising that networks have taken to competing as the most malicious, outrageous and disgusting.
Oh, and by the way no, ABC is not even well mannered enough to have the show’s titles be “B******” but they feel the need to spell out each rancid letter. Way to go ABC and, by the way, there are people dying for the right to vote and due to natural disasters but surely your pop-cultural shots at Christianity are of the utmost importance.
In the words of Ravi Zacharias (Jesus Among Other Gods, p. Intro-vii):
We are living in a time when sensitivities are at the surface, often vented with cutting words. Philosophically, you can believe anything, so long as you do not claim it to be true. Morally, you can practice anything, so long as you do not claim it is a “better” way. Religiously, you can hold to anything, so long as you do not bring Jesus Christ into it.
If a spiritual idea is eastern, it is granted critical immunity; if western, it is thoroughly criticized.
