Lady Gaga on “Don’t ask, don’t tell”
What do you get when a celebrity speaks out on a current political, moral, religious or virtually any issue?
You get the statements of some whose only qualifications for making a statement on the matter is that they are a celebrity and thus, someone is willing to place a microphone and camera before them.
Enter Lady Gaga who has addressed the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.
Within the speech we find Lady Gaga stating, “I wrote this speech, this address, myself, I’ve spent 48 hours…” but before you unload a flurry of sarcasm to the tune of, “My oh my, what an accomplishment that is!” keep in mind that by doing so, she has already gone light-years beyond virtually any speech by any politician.
Should that make you feel better? No!
Well, she wrote it and from the onset one thing is clear: she is mis, mal and un informed. She begins with this recitation, “I do, solemnly swear, or affirm, that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States, against all enemies foreign and domestic, and I will bear true faith and allegiance to do the same, and I will obey the orders of the president of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the uniform code of military justice, so help me God.”
But before you salute, here is what followed, “Unless, there’s a gay soldier in my unit, sir.”
And so, her speech is based on a false premise as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is not about keeping homosexuals out of the military but about having them serve without making their homosexuality an issue—a soldier’s identity is service to country and brotherhood (or should one say non-gender-specific-hood?) and not about activism in the realm of sexual preference.
She states that, “‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is wrong. … It’s unjust, and fundamentally, it is against all that we stand for as Americans [ellipses in original].” But how is having homosexuals serve alongside of breeders against American values? Because they cannot out themselves?
Lady Gaga states, “straight soldiers feel uncomfortable around gay soldiers, and sometimes it causes tension, hostility and possible performance inadequacies for straight soldiers who are homophobic” but why conclude homophobia? Think of it this way: forget gender in the military; let us just have co-ed showers. Now you get, part of, the picture. When you are showering do you want the person next to you to be someone who is sexually attracted to you? Perhaps personages such as Lady Gaga do but as for the rest of this center to right country; the answer is likely, “No.” Why should hetero males be deprived of showering with young and physically fit females? Why should hetero females not shower with hunks?

Well, Lady Gaga has a lot of fallacy peppered through her self-authored speech and yet, it all revolves around a the same faulty premise, “Shouldn’t it be made clear to the citizens of this country, before we go to war, shouldn’t I be made aware ahead of time that some of us are just not included in that fight? ‘We’re going to war for you and you and you and you, but not you, because you’re gay!”
At a time when acceptance and endorsement of homosexuality is at an all-time high one should, at least, speak publicly on such issues after getting the basic down correctly.
