Below are links to the audio of a 2008 AD Advisory Neighborhood Commission wherein Washington Neighborhood Commissioner Frank Winstead stated that Comet Ping Pong Pizza owner James Alefantis’ was “trying to turn this into Adams Morgan [a culturally diverse neighborhood], with the murders, the rapes.”
He seems to be implying that the restaurant should not be granted staying open later into the night (2-3 a.m.), which Alefantis was requesting, due to later hours leading to late night crime easy pickins.
Winstead also stated that Alefantis was “filling up his fat wallet, “He’s lying, cheating!” and even spitting on customers’ food.
Since the crowd roared in protest until Winstead was drowned out, etc. Commissioner Mital Gandhi said, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen that much support for any establishment before. The whole crowd was just booing this guy. They were all disgusted.”
