In March of 2012 AD ex-Led Zeppelin guitarist, Jimmy Page, release a recording titled “Lucifer Rising and Other Sound Tracks.” Stick with us on this as we will go from denials of actual practices of the occult to outright admissions.
In keeping with our modern fascination of re-mixing, revisiting, re-mastering and re-making; the new release comes exactly 40 years from the time of the original recording. This surely some occult numerology involved in this including that it appears to be timed to the Spring Equinox.
The music therein dates to a 1972 AD project when Page recorded a soundtrack for Kenneth Anger’s short film “Lucifer Rising.” The film is largely referred to as “avant-garde” which seems to mean “getting away with being satanic by hiding behind a veil of being fashionable (it technically refers to something like forward thinking, outside of the norm, etc.). Note that filming actually began in 1966 AD which coincidentally—wink, wink, nudge, nudge—is the same year that Anton LeVey established the church of satan.
Also, filming was abruptly abandoned in 1967 AD due to Kenneth Anger accusing Bobby Beausoleil, who originally composed the film’s soundtrack, of stealing the footage even whilst Beausoleil claimed that Anger had exhausted all funds. Eventually, Anger spliced some of the remaining footage and released it as the short film “Invocation of My Demon Brother.” In 1970 AD Beausoleil was convicted of the murder of Gary Hinman in relation to the cult of Charles Manson.
Mick Jagger’s brother Chris also had a conflict with Anger and was almost completely exorcised from the film. Beausoleil ended up writing music whilst imprisoned for murder. Jimmy Page actually made a brief appearance in the film, and here is where things get interesting, as he held an Egyptian stele as he gazes at a portrait of the 20th century’s most infamous black magickian, the satanist Aleister Crowley. Crowley himself is credited in the film as the “Thelemic consultant” meaning that he provided real life guidance as to how to infuse the film with true Satanism (this is in reference to his works as Crowley died in 1947 AD).

Reportedly, the name Led Zeppelin came about when Jimmy Page asked Keith Moon and John Entwistle to join him in a new project. Keith stated “that would go over like a lead balloon” and John stated, “more like a lead zeppelin!” With a little modification of the name Led Zeppelin. Interestingly, lead and led are very different things as a lead zeppelin would not perform its intended task of floating and thus sailing through the air. On the other hand, a led zeppelin would float and sail and yet would be led about. This is reminiscent of the Biblical warning, “we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming” (Ephesians 4:14).
The Led Zeppelin was just that, a vehicle whereby a black magickally inspired band led their fans to and fro from promises of a stairway to heaven to the rising of lucifer and the greased stairway to hell. And this is not just an assertion but a logical conclusion of their very own statements, actions, lyrics and symbolism. Much could be said about this and so we will focus on Jimmy Page in this article.
Reportedly: Jimmy Page has said on many occasions that he himself is not a Satanist of any kind but is intrigued by the occult and fascinated by the life of Aleister Crowley. He has never once tried to push his hobby onto anyone else and keeps it very private. Jimmy is a very superstitious person but NOT a believer in Satan or evil as some may think. It’s merely and interest and a quite fascinating hobby.
Well, if it is really so private then how do we know exactly what he is into? Also, that he is “NOT a believer in Satan or evil as some may think” means that he believes exactly as satanists reportedly believe as they too do not believe in satan as a person, a being, but as a concept, a mental projection or a force of sorts (this is, of course, generally and generically speaking, see here).

He [Crowley] was a master of evil…but you can’t just ignore evil if you study the supernatural, as a whole, as I do. I have many books on the subject and I’ve attended a number of s’eances. I want to go on studying it…

He certainly does not sound like a mere distanced academic.
Page bought Crowley’s house in 1970 AD, the year of Bobby Beausoleil’s Charles Manson related murder of Gary Hinman. The house built on the site of a church in which parishioners died when it burned. It is also reported that, at some point, someone had been beheaded at the site. It was from that home that Aleister Crowley performed rituals to summon the Egyptian false gods Thoth, Horus. He also contacted his “guardian angel” which, in cases of black magick, are demonic entities, “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). One wonders if Stephen King was not inspired to write portions of “The Shining” based on the lodge keeper of the Boleskine having gone insane and attempting to murder his family.
It is said that “shadowy shapes” amassed there and that Crowley had to use lamps whist transcribing magickal words even during the light of the day.
The same Stephen Davis referenced above adds this note:
Since Crowley had lived there, it had been the site of a notorious swindle involving many of the local farmers and a fictitious pork sausage works.
He quaintly ads: Jimmy Page, longing for a countryseat, thought it was perfect.
Oh yes, he merely sought a countryseat and hey, what better place than a haunted mansion!!!
Maybe the philosopher Eddie Murphy said it best: Why don’t white people just leave the house when there’s a ghost in the house? Y’all stay in the house too…long. Get…out of the house! Very simple: If there’s a ghost in the house, get…out! And not only did they stay in the house with the poltergeist, they invite more people over! [Now referring to the movie Poltergeist] Sitting around going: “Our daughter Carroll-Ann’s in the television set.” I would have been gone. If I had a daughter, went down to the precinct and say, “Look man, I went home my…daughter’s in the T.V. set and I just…left. You can have all this, I ain’t going back…I just came down so when she ain’t at the school you don’t think I killed [her] or anything like that. But she is inside the tv set you can have all that…Thank you. “Mr. Murphy didn’t you try to save your daughter?” “Yeah, I’m a man, see I tried to save her I turned the channels [and it] didn’t work. I got…out.” The kid was only years old in the movie, they couldn’t have been to attached to her. In the Amityville Horror [movie] the ghost told them to get out of the house. White people stayed in there. Now that’s a hint and a half for you…A ghost say get…out, I would just tip…out the door! Lou Walker looked in the toilet bowl, there was blood in the toilet and said, “That’s peculiar.” I would ‘ve been in the house saying: “Oh baby this is beautiful. We got a chandelier hanging up here, kids outside playing. It’s a beautiful neighbourhood. We ain’t got nothing to worry about, I really love it, this is really nice.” “GET OUT !”

There are certainly various stories about Jimmy Page’s actual practices such as that performed Crowley’s rituals during concerts. Led Zeppelin singer, Robert Plant, claimed that the song “Stairway to Heaven” was, at least partially, written via the occult practice of automatic writing whereby a demonic spirit takes over part of your body and actually writes, in this case, lyrics. Plant states that the phrase, “There’s a lady who thinks all that glitters is gold” just came out that way and that he almost fell off of his chair when it did so. The lyric refer to “May Queen” which is said to me the title of a poem by Aleister Crowley.
It is also said that Jimmy Page had various forms of the Crowley line, “Do what thou wilt” inscribed upon the very vinyl of the albums, a line which ended with “shall be the whole of the law, or “so mete (or, mote) it be” (for the younger crowd, albums are, like, ginormous CDs made of a plastic like material called vinyl).
Also infamous is the four symbols which the band used to represent each of the four members. Jimmy Page also had zodiacal symbols on the clothing he wore during concerts.
It is also reported: In the early 1970s, Jimmy Page owned an occult bookshop and publishing house, “The Equinox Booksellers and Publishers” in Kensington High Street, London, eventually closing it as the increasing success of Led Zeppelin resulted in his having insufficient time to devote to it.
In “I’m With The Band,” Pamela Des Barres recalls one of the more interesting aspects of her relationship with Page: scouring Hollywood for rare occult literature to ship back to the Guitar God.
During an interview with Guitar World magazine from January 2008 AD, Page was asked about a portion of the movie The Song Remains The Same wherein he is depicted as a hermit in footage that was filmed at night, behind the Boleskine estate. He was asked why he portrayed himself as a hermit even though he was a public figure: Page: Well, I was hermetic. I was involved in the hermetic arts, but I wasn’t a recluse. Or maybe I was…The image of the hermit that was used for the [inside cover] art-work on Led Zeppelin IV and in the movie actually has its origins in a painting of Christ called The Light of the World by the pre-Raphaelite artist William Holman Hunt. The imagery was later transferred to the Waite tarot deck. My segment was supposed to be the aspirant going to the beacon of truth, which is represented by the hermit and his journey toward it. What I was trying to say through the transformation was that enlightenment can be achieved at any point in time; it just depends on when you want to access it. In other words you can always see the truth, but do you recognize it when you see it or do you have to reflect back on it later? “I was involved in the hermetic arts” means that he was actively practicing witchcraft. Now, the “Christ” to which such people refer is not the historical, biblical Christ. To occultists the “light bearer” is just that lucifer; the one who disguises himself as an angel of light, the Prometheus figure who steals fire from the gods and gives it to humanity, the one who “enlightened” humanity by encouraging the knowledge of good and evil along with the promise “you will be like god” (see Genesis 3).
Occultists seek the light of lucifer who rebelled against YHVH and became satan—the adversary—which “can be achieved at any point in time…you can always see the truth” but they seek truth from the “father of lies” (John 8:44).

Guitar World: There was always a certain amount of speculation about your occult studies. It may have been subtle, but you weren’t really hiding it.
Page: I was living it. That’s all there is to it. It was my life – that fusion of magick and music.
Guitar World: Your use of symbols was very advanced. The sigil on Led Zeppelin IV and the embroidery on your stage clothes from that time period are good examples on how you left your mark on popular culture. It’s something that major corporations are aggressively pursuing these days: using symbols as a form of branding.
Page: You mean talismanic magick? Yes, I knew what I was doing. There’s no point in saying much about it, because the more you discuss it, the more eccentric you appear to be. But the fact is – as far as I was concerned – it was working, so I used it. But it’s really no different than people who wear ribbons around their wrists: it’s a talismanic approach to something. Well let me amend that: it’s not exactly the same thing, but it is in the same realm. I’ll leave this subject by saying the four musical elements of Led Zeppelin making a fifth is magick into itself. That’s the alchemical process.
Since the Garden of Eden, satan has not had an original idea and the tragedy is that he has not had to because we keep falling for the same old lie repackaged: you will be like God. Indeed, the song remains the same.
