Herein I conclude my “Exodus as premise for…” series, all of which you can find here.
One interesting, and somewhat humorous, aspect of the Exodus event is that God assures us that He performed it. Yet, when the people are being naughty (and other times as well), He tends to state that they are Moses’ people and that Moses brought them out of Egypt and during such times Moses tells God that no, He is the one who did so. I recall that my Bible teacher in private Jewish schools stated that this is like when a child does something wrong and, for example, the mom will tell the dad, “Look at what your daughter did!”
Exodus 32 And the LORD said to Moses, “Go, get down! For your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves.
Exodus 32 Then Moses pleaded with the LORD his God, and said: “LORD, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?
Exodus 33 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Depart and go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt…
Deuteronomy 9 [Moses states] your people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted corruptly.
1 Samuel 12 Then Samuel said to the people, “It is the LORD who raised up Moses and Aaron, and who brought your fathers up from the land of Egypt.”
Yet, there is another player in the case of who done it as “the LORD…sent the Angel and brought us up out of Egypt” (Numbers 20) and “the Angel of the LORD…said: ‘I led you up from Egypt and brought you to the land of which I swore to your fathers; and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you’’” (Judges 2).
And, of course, there was the golden calf issue wherein an idol was said to be responsible for their liberation:
Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him”…
And he [Aaron] received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf. Then they said, “This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!”…
And the LORD said to Moses, “Go, get down! For your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves…
They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, ‘This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!
Then Moses pleaded with the LORD his God, and said: “LORD, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?…
For they said to me, ‘Make us gods that shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him’” (Exodus 32)
