Herein I continue my “Exodus as premise for…” series, all of which you can find here.
Hereafter are the relevant texts pertaining to in terms of God’s compassion for the Hebrew’s suffering, “the children of Israel groaned because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry came up to God because of the bondage….And the LORD said: ‘I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows’” (Exodus 2-3). Also, it was “because He loved your fathers, therefore He chose their descendants after them; and He brought you out of Egypt with His Presence, with His mighty power” (Deuteronomy 4) and “When Jacob had gone into Egypt, and your fathers cried out to the LORD, then the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt and made them dwell in this place” (1 Samuel 12).
Egypt as the “house of bondage,” since “the Egyptians afflicted us and our fathers” (Numbers 20), is referenced twice in Exodus 13 and in 20, Deuteronomy 5, 6, 7, 8 twice in 13, Joshua 24, Judges 6—FYI: I stopped tracking all of the above referenced points at 1 Samuel simply due to how long this article was already getting. Also, God stated, “I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you” (Joshua 5).
Note that what God did is variously referred to as wonders and signs and theses where indicative of his might—indicative to the Hebrews and Goyim/Gentiles alike.
Exodus 2-3 So I will stretch out My hand and strike Egypt with all My wonders…
Exodus 7 I will…multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt.
Exodus 10 tell in the hearing of your son and your son’s son the mighty things I have done in Egypt, and My signs which I have done among them, that you may know that I am the LORD.
Exodus 13 Moses said to the people: “Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out of this place…with a strong hand the LORD has brought you out of Egypt…By strength of hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
Exodus 14 Israel saw the great work which the LORD had done in Egypt; so the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD and His servant Moses.
Exodus 16 At evening you shall know that the LORD has brought you out of the land of Egypt.
Leviticus 26 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that you should not be their slaves; I have broken the bands of your yoke and made you walk upright.
Numbers 14 these men who have seen My glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have put Me to the test now these ten times…
Numbers 23 & 24 God brings them out of Egypt; He has strength like a wild ox.
Deuteronomy 1 The LORD your God, who goes before you, He will fight for you, according to all He did for you in Egypt before your eyes
Deuteronomy 4 the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be His people, an inheritance, as you are this day…did God ever try to go and take for Himself a nation from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
Deuteronomy 6 you shall say to your son: ‘We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand…’ the LORD showed signs and wonders before our eyes, great and severe, against Egypt, Pharaoh, and all his household.
Deuteronomy 7 because the LORD loves you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore to your fathers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
Deuteronomy 9 O Lord GOD, do not destroy Your people and Your inheritance whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
Deuteronomy 11 His signs and His acts which He did in the midst of Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to all his land…what He did to the army of Egypt
Deuteronomy 26 So the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders.
Deuteronomy 29 Moses called all Israel and said to them: “You have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land…”
Deuteronomy 34…all the signs and wonders which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt, before Pharaoh, before all his servants, and in all his land
Joshua 2 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt…
Joshua 9 of the name of the LORD your God…we have heard of His fame, and all that He did in Egypt
Joshua 24 I brought your fathers out of Egypt…your eyes saw what I did in Egypt.
Judges 6 Gideon said to Him, “O my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?’…”
1 Samuel 2 …Thus says the LORD: ‘Did I not clearly reveal Myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?
1 Samuel 8 all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt
1 Samuel 10 Thus says the LORD God of Israel: “I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all kingdoms and from those who oppressed you.”
And so, “they shall know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them up out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell among them. I am the LORD their God” (Exodus 29) and “I am the LORD who brings you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God” (Leviticus 11).
Therefore, “When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and people more numerous than you, do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God is with you, who brought you up from the land of Egypt” (Deuteronomy 20) and “the LORD our God is He who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way that we went and among all the people through whom we passed” (Joshua 24).
Despite all of this, at one point “God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, ‘Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt’” (Exodus 13) and there are various instances when the people were so ungrateful that they longed to return to Egypt. Yet, they were to fear not but where to “remember well what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt” (Deuteronomy 7).
In the next segment, all of which you can find here, we will consider Exodus as premise for Hebrew principles and laws.
