Pondering Were the Nephilim the cause of the flood in the Bible?

The question Were the Nephilim the cause of the flood in the Bible? was posted to the Quora site and led to this discussion when Dick Harfield commented

The biblical flood belongs in the world of mythology, along with the biblical nephilim. Nevertheless, the story of the flood is ambiguous at this point. On the one hand, Genesis 6:4 speaks of giants, presumably the hybrid offspring of a union of women with paranormal beings, but on the other hand, verses 5 and 6 say that man was wicked and that God repented of creating man.

In either case, we need not feel angry with the biblical nephilim because there never was a great worldwide flood that covered all the mountains.

Your first statement was you beginning with a conclusion to which you merely jumped by asserting it and is a positive affirmation you must prove.

Also, what, on your worldview, is wrong with believing that “mythology” is actually true?

Now, there’s no ambiguity: Genesis 6:4 speaks of Nephilim, the hybrid offspring of a union of women with Angels and verses 5 and 6 say that man was wicked: so, what of it?

Hi Ken,

By all means go ahead and believe that the mythology is actually true, as long as you do not need evidence for your belief. You need to believe that “male” angels find female humans sexually desirable and that they are capable of producing fertile offspring. What about female angels—are they supposed to exist and have sexual desires?

Hi Dick,

So, we’ve established that on your worldview there’s nothing wrong with believing that “mythology” is actually true.

We also established that you made a positive affirmation you can’t prove: lesson learned is to not make positive affirmations you can’t prove.

Now, is there a universal imperative, on your worldview, to “need evidence for” our “belief”? Or do you realize that that’s just another subjective personal preference du jour of yours that you can’t impose upon anyone else?

I “need to believe that”? Okay, done. Now what?

There either are no female Angels or they’re never mentioned.

And that, as they say, is the end of that: and it’s sad that my ongoing experience appears to be that people make assertions, I call on them to back them and correct them, they realize they can’t back them, they stop replying.
