Elon Musk – transhuman neural lace & prosthetic memory storage

High tech entrepreneur Elon Musk “is apparently busy protecting us from being treated like house pets after the Singularity.”

Enter the Neural Lace which in the video (viewable in two formats) here Musk labors to explain amidst many stalling half sentences, etc.

The point of it is basically to radically increase human intelligence (whatever that means) so as to keep artificial intelligence from so utterly overcoming humans that we become nothing but pets.
This is to be accomplished by weaving a cyber interface into the human brain.

Thus, this is the ultimate Catch 22 whereby we are urged to become transhuman cyborgs in order to compete with A.I.

To illustrate just how art imitates life and life imitates art, it has been noted that such a concept was explored by Iain M. Banks within his sci fi book series Culture. As the interaction between brain, cyberspace and the Neural Lace increased the brain’s contents could be retrieved after death (and presumably at any point prior).

Imagine the ultimate identity theft: how would you like your whole persona hacked, copied, downloaded, uploaded into well, who knows who or what.

Elon Musk Tweeted, “Creating a neural lace is the thing that really matters for humanity to achieve symbiosis with machines.” He was asked, “How’s the neural lace and augmented/enhanced intelligence thing going? Also have you played Deus Ex: Mankind Divided yet?” This refers to a video game wherein the titled “Deus Ex” means “out of god” or “god” preceding forth out of something. He replied, “Making progress. Maybe something to announce in a few months. Have played all prior Deus Ex. Not this one yet.”

The power source for the Neural Lace would be our own blood since neurons require a constant flow of blood. Thus, an injection directly into the jugular would carry the lace’s components into the brain.

This can also tie into a new memory prosthetic which is also an implantable device which is meant to deliver instant recall. This is advertised as beneficial to the average person, those reaching that age when memory is, becomes, can, wait…what was I writing about? As well as those who suffered brain trauma, have Alzheimer’s, etc.

A company called Kernel has been working on this device which will store input into a long term memory storage microchip that will be embedded into the brain.

Of course, this opens the door for mass storage of information that we have not accessed through our own senses. We could upload cyber info, we could download our vacation memories and our friends and family could upload them so as to experience then by proxy. Of course, if you have sense based recall of the trip what is the difference between having been there in the first place—hey, we could just turn you into a brain in a jar and stimulate you into experiencing any world we want.
Of course, there is always the issue of hacking: how would you like your trade secrets to be downloaded directly from your brain by some kid with a Pringles canister?
